We have tickets to a Broadway show and hope the weather is nice enough to visit some of the sites that we have not seen on our past visits. There is no place like NYC. It really is the “capital of the world” in so many ways. From the subways to the crowded sidewalks, the city really never slows down. Like the song says, “If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere, it’s up to you, New York, New York”. 1st Ladies Health Fair Mayor Brown and 1st Lady Hedako Brown invite you to attend an event this Sunday, April 27 entitled: “1st Ladies Health Fair” to be held at Memorial Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free health screening, information on mental health and nutrition and much more. The event is sponsored by Walgreens. “Take Time, to Take Care” is a good motto for everyone. Historical Society Meeting There will be an Open Meeting of the Hawthorne Historical Society on Monday, April 28 beginning at 6:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. Refreshments are served. The program will include a guest speaker and a chat about their experience in Hawthorne. Audience participation is encouraged. Bring your memories and your memorabilia and enjoy a relaxing evening recalling the past. The meetings are held at the Hawthorne Museum, located at 12622 S. Grevillea Avenue. The HHS is making plans for the 4th Annual Good Neighbors Day which is scheduled for Saturday, July 19 at the civic center. Along with our annual car show, hometown grown, world traveling singer, Chris Montez, returns to give a concert in the city where his talent really started to take off over 50 years ago. Relay for Life Here are the facts: This year about 564,800 Americans are expected to die of cancer— more than 1,500 people a day. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US, exceeded only by heart disease. One of every four deaths in the US is from cancer. Since 1990, there have been approximately 5 million cancer deaths. The American Cancer Society is the leader in raising funds for cancer research. One day we will find a cure for cancer. When we do, the lives of many Americans will change dramatically. A Relay for Life event is held annually to raise additional funds to help with this search for a cure. The Hawthorne High School track is the site of our local Relay. This year the 24 hour walking, running event will be held on May 3 and 4th. Teams are still being organized. If you would like to participate and get donations to help raise funds, please contact Thierry Lubenec at thierrylubenect@yahoo.com. Rock Around the Block The Wiseburn Education Foundation annually puts on a great fundraising event called, “Rock Around the Block”. This year it will be held on Saturday, May 3 at Dana Middle School. There are games, food, vendors and raffles, plenty of fun for the entire family. Hawthorne 5K Run and Health Fair The Hawthorne Education Foundation annually sponsors a 5K Fun Run and Health Fair. Saturday, May 10 is the date for this event this year. It will be held at the Memorial Park. So, get running and get going to sign up for the 5K.
