Page 2 April 10, 2014 Hawthorne Happenings News for the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ CLIMBING ROCKS IN HAWTHORNE? Yes, you can do some rock climbing in Hawthorne! There are large boulders and a thirty foot high sheer rock wall in our city. You may be wondering, “Where would this be?”. It is true, you can experience the thrill of rock climbing, practice your climbing skills, and get a full body workout all at the same time at Hangar 18 Rock Gym located just off of Rosecrans Avenue. Hidden in a small industrial park is the gym that has 2,000 members paying a monthly membership fee to do something fun while working their bodies and mind. My nephew, Erik, from Bend, OR is staying with us while working towards his university degree. He is an avid rock climber. There are many climbing areas up in his Central Oregon community. He finds it enjoyable to climb while he is here in the big city. The only time I’ve experienced a little taste of rock climbing was several years ago on our annual “men only” fishing trip up in the High Sierras of Central California. I was brave enough to climb down the side of a rock cliff using a rope tied around my waist. This is called belaying. “Belaying” is the term used to describe a “variety of techniques climbers use to exert friction on a climbing rope so that a falling climber does not fall very far”. I noticed that the floor of the Hangar 18 gym is padded. So, if a climber does fall, they may survive. I think I will leave this activity to the younger folks. (Hangar 18 Rock Gym is located at 4926 W. Rosecrans Avenue. You can call them at 310-973-3388 or check out their website at www.climbhangar18.com.) AMERICA’S PASTIME IS IN TROUBLE The Los Angeles Dodgers held their home opener last Friday and unless you had tickets to the game, or a Time Warner subscriber, you could not see the Boys in Blue play their hated rivals, the San Francisco Giants. The contract negotiations will continue between Time Warner and other providers. In the mean time, most Dodger fans will have to listen to Dodger games on the radio. This is big deal right now for Dodger fans, but it’s not the only time sporting events are not being shown to the “average joe” fan. Some of the biggest sporting events are now only shown on cable networks. The Rose Bowl football game, for example, is shown on ESPN. What all this means is that the little guys are being left out. If you do not pay for cable or satellite then you will not see what I saw on free television back when I was growing up. I became a baseball fan from watching the sport on a black and white television every Saturday afternoon. I realize that most people put cable television as a high priority in their family’s monthly budget, right after their cell phones. I just think that the Dodgers are Los Angeles’ team and everyone in LA should have the chance to watch their team play without paying $100 per month for a cable bill. OFFICE HOURS FOR CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS Alex Vargas holds open office hours from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on the Mondays before any regular City Council meeting. CITY OF HAWTHORNE MOVING FORWARD The City Council is considering taking the initial action to purchase multiple properties located in the civic center area surrounding the current city hall. The long range goal is to develop the entire downtown area to make it the true center of civic activity. This plan will take many years to evolve and require a lot of outside funding. CENTINELA VALLEY UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD MEETINGS There has been quite a bit of interest in attending the CVUHSD meetings lately. All regular governing board meetings are held on the second or third Tuesday of the month and will convene at 5:45 p.m. in the Centinela Valley Center for the Arts, located at 14901 Inglewood Avenue, Lawndale. The next meeting is scheduled for April 15. The Daily Breeze has been investigating the financial expenditures of the governing board recently. ROCK AROUND THE BLOCK The Wiseburn Education Foundation annually puts on a great fundraising event called, “Rock Around the Block”. This year it will be held on Saturday, May 3 at Dana Middle School. There are games, food, vendors and raffles, plenty of fun for the entire family. THANK YOU Thank you to all of you who attended our annual Pancake Breakfast. We served over 600 people last Saturday morning. It was a great event. CONTACT INFO norbhuber@gmail.com or 310-292-6714. (Thanks for reading my column.
