March 24, 2016 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings News for the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ From City Clerk Norb Huber State of the City – Today Mayor Vargas will give his first State of the City address on Thursday, March 24th at the Memorial Center. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with the program beginning at 12 noon. There are many neat things happening in our city and we will certainly be there to celebrate them with other business and civic leaders. Happy Easter What is there to be happy for at Easter? With so much bad news all around us locally, nationally and in most every part of our planet, is there anything we really can be happy about? The Bible tells us many things and one of the big things it says is that there is and always will be sin in our world. We all sin. We all do things that hurt others. Everyone who has ever lived in this world has done things wrong. From the very start, we were born into sin and continue to sin daily, hourly, even minutely. You get the idea that we all are poor, miserable sinners who are helpless in regards to making things right with God. That is where Jesus comes in. Jesus took upon himself all of our sins. He suffered an excruciating death on Good Friday, but arose from the grave on Easter. Because He lives we too can live. That is the good news. We have eternal life simply by the grace of God through Jesus Christ. That is the HAPPY in Easter. We were dead, now we are alive! Even in this crazy, sin-filled world we can be happy. Am I outwardly happy every day? No, but this Easter happiness is inside of me and I rely on it every day of my life. Why not be happy? Historical Society Meeting The next open meeting of the Hawthorne Historical Society will be held this Monday, March 28th beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Hawthorne Museum. We will have a guest speaker and refreshments. Plan to attend and get to know more about the history of Hawthorne along with getting to know some of your good neighbors. Cleanup Day at Holly Park Local residents are invited to help keep their park looking good on Saturday, April 2 beginning at 9 a.m. at Holly Park located at 120th Street and Van Ness Avenue. This special effort is being organized by Jordan Riedel, a concerned Hawthorne neighbor. He can be contacted at jriedel44@gmail.com. This will be a great time to meet some of your neighbors and do a service project at the same time. Old Trailer Company If you know of someone who worked at or has any information regarding the motor home trailer company that manufactured trailers on Hawthorne Blvd. at about 117th Street in the ’50’s and ‘60’s please email me. I received a call from a man in Green Bay, WI who is restoring a “tear drop” shaped trailers who is anxious to know more about our Hawthorne company. Golf Tournament The 27th Annual Hawthorne Parks and Recreation Foundation Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, April 11th at Coyote Hills Golf Club in Fullerton. Annually, this tournament raises a lot of money to provide programs and services to the residents of Hawthorne. We are always looking for additional golfers and sponsors. If you wish to have your company sponsor a foursome, or if you simply wish to join up with another foursome you are welcome to participate and support a great cause. For more information please contact, Dick Huhn at 310-643-9157. Lunch and dinner are both included with your entry fees. Upcoming Events Hawthorne Health Fair/Service Provider Fair – Sat.
