February 27, 2014 Page 5 Lawndale Begins IA Playoffs With Win Over Ventura By Joe Snyder Lawndale High’s boys’ basketball team got off to a quick start and defeated Ventura 65-50 in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division IA playoffs last Friday at Lawndale. The Cardinals, who improved to 19-8, wasted little time in surging out to an early 14-1 lead. After that, the Cougars regrouped and managed to cut Lawndale’s lead to five points (28-23) by halftime and one (33-32) early in the third quarter behind a pair of threepoint baskets from Dustin Houck and Stevie Ledesma. The Cardinals, though, were able to respond as they scored 16 unanswered points to get their lead to 49-32 later in the period. Lawndale held mostly a safe lead in the final quarter, although Ventura made a few small threats. “Our big task was to complete this game,” Lawndale head coach Chris Brownlee said. “Our expectations are higher. We set high expectations. Ventura doesn’t have the best players but is well-coached.” The Cardinals had balanced scoring led by six-foot-nine junior center Chimeze Metu with a game-high 15 points. Lawndale’s other 6-9 junior, Roderick Jones, and guard Chris White each added 14 points. White scored eight of his points in the fourth quarter to help the Cardinals maintain their lead. The Cougars, who were an at-large team from the Channel League, were led by Houck with 11 points. The win moved Lawndale into the second round last Tuesday at A.B. Miller High in Fontana. Miller won its first round game over host Mark Keppel High 62-57 in overtime last Friday in Alhambra. If the Cardinals win, they will take on either Fullerton Troy or Riverside Martin Luther King at a site to be determined in the quarterfinals Friday at 7 p.m. INGLEWOOD WINS IAA OPENER Inglewood High’s young boys’ basketball team got the winning experience in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division IAA playoffs last Friday at Dana Hills in Dana Point. The Sentinels topped the Dolphins 62-51. Inglewood, which improved to 16-11 after placing third in the Ocean League, was able to top the South Coast League runner-ups behind Terrell Gomez with 25 points and five assists. Javon Burnum chipped in 13 points and Darae Elliot contributed eight points and 14 rebounds. The win put the Sents into the second round at home against fifth-seeded Los Alamitos last Tuesday. HAWTHORNE, LEUZINGER FALL Despite low league finishes, the Hawthorne and Leuzinger boys’ basketball teams gave it a shot in the CIF-Southern Section Division IIIAA playoffs. The Cougars, who placed last in the Ocean League, ended their season at 7-17 with a 59-44 loss to host Bishop Amat High on February 19 in La Puente. The Olympians, who were fifth in the Bay League, were ousted by host Charter Oak 66-55 on February19 in Covina. Leuzinger finished at 10-18. LADY SENTS ROLL INTO QUARTERS Inglewood High’s girls’ basketball team proved why it is the top seed in the CIFSouthern Section Division IIIA playoffs after a pair of easy wins last week. In the first round last Thursday, the host Lady Sentinels rolled over Pomona Ganesha 77-24. In the second round on Saturday, Inglewood downed visiting Santa Paula 63-39. The Sents, who improved to 17-12, were led by Ejelia Lloyd with 21 points, seven assists and six steals. Dominquie Godbolt had 14 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots. Andrece Tate finished with 11 points and nine rebounds. Last Thursday, Godbolt led Inglewood with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Aja Daniels tallied 15 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Lloyd totaled 11 points, nine assists and eight steals. For the third consecutive time, Inglewood was at home against Burroughs High from Ridgecrest in the quarterfinals last night. If the Sentinels win, they will face either Huntington Beach Ocean View or South Pasadena at a site to be determined in the semifinals Saturday at 7 p.m. If Inglewood wins both games, it will play for the championship at the Anaheim Honda Center, Azusa-Pacific University or Santa Ana Godinez High on March 7 or 8. HAWTHORNE, LAWNDALE KICKERS OPEN WITH WINS The Hawthorne and Lawndale boys’ soccer teams began the CIF-Southern Section Division IV playoffs with easy first round wins last Thursday at home. The Ocean League champion Cougars rolled over West Ranch from Valencia 5-1. Hawthorne (19-2-3) had two goals apiece from Jeremiah Egujie and Francisco Alvarez. Jason Santana also had a goal for the Cougars. Hawthorne hosted Chino in the second round last Tuesday in hope of making today’s quarterfinals against either fourth seed Bellflower or Lake Elsinore Lakeside at 3 p.m. Joel Martin got things going for Pioneer League champion Lawndale with two first half goals in its 4-1 home victory over Pomona Ganesha last Thursday. Jose Salazar and Andrew Reteria also each scored for the Cardinals, who visited Foothill League champion Hart High in Newhall on Tuesday.
