Tyson Jr. Feb. 14, 1945 – Feb. 1, 2014 John A. Tyson Jr. passed away peacefully in his home in Lawndale after a lifelong struggle with cancer. He was born in Macon, Mississippi to John and Virginia Tyson. John attended school in Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana. He graduated with honors in 1963 from Broadmoor High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He went to college at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and received a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering in 1970. During college, he worked two summers as an intern with NASA at Cape Canaveral and New Orleans. Following graduation, John was an engineer for Hughes and Raytheon his entire professional career of 32 years. During his career he was a member of a close team of people responsible for making the TOW (Tube launched, Optical tracked, Wire-guided) missile program a success and he received credit for several patents. While growing up he excelled in academics and music. At age 15 he was first diagnosed with cancer, which required treatment through high school and college. The physical effects of that cancer and treatments prevented him from continuing to play the clarinet; however, his love of music continued and he played drum in his high school band and was President of the band club. After moving to CA, he fell in love with the recorder and it was a passion the rest of his life. Early Music was his favorite and he enjoyed performing at renaissance fairs and was a longtime member of Bankside, La Mer and Los Angeles Recorder Orchestra (LARO) musical groups. Other interests  included backpacking, GPS and his iPad. He is survived by his brother Tom Tyson, sister-in-law Matie (Crossley) Tyson, sister Ruby Sue Muffoletto, brother in law Gerald Muffoletto, nieces and  nephews Gini Tyson, Michelle (Tyson) Cornwell, Todd Muffoletto, Robb Tyson, and Kimberley (Muffoletto) Wilkinson, four grand nieces and nephew, and special friends Glynda Bragg and Megan Baierski. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Feb 6, 2014 at Douglas Family Mortuary, 500 E Imperial Avenue, El Segundo CA 90245. • Hawthorne Happenings News for the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ From City Clerk Norb Huber Are you a Good Neighbor? Hawthorne’s motto is the “City of Good Neighbors”. I have yet to learn of how this slogan came to be attached to our city. Regardless of how it began, I like it. It gives us something to feel good about, something to live up to. The motto’s message is close to being biblical. Jesus talks about loving our neighbor like our self. What does it mean to be a “good neighbor”? Hawthorne consists of about five or six neighborhoods. We are all surrounded by people trying to make a living, just like us. Maybe our neighbors just want to enjoy a peaceful retirement. Whatever our situation in life, there are many ways to show our concern for others. It doesn’t take much. A simple act like helping an elderly neighbor pull their garbage cans out to the curb or pulling them back in could really be all that is necessary. Maybe saving a neighbor a parking ticket when they have forgotten to move their car for street sweeping. Being a good neighbor may just be an awareness of what’s going on around your block. I was at Home Depot the other day and I saw a smaller man straining to lift large, heavy concrete blocks into the back of his truck. I went over and helped him load the blocks. I may never see him again, but I do know he was appreciative of my help. With our little acts of kindness and concern we ARE good neighbors. The more we treat others with respect, the more we continue to hold our motto high, the “City of Good Neighbors”. Time Warner It was terrible timing, probably the worse time for a broadcast to go dark. There was about five minutes left in the first half of the Super Bowl with Seattle leading 22-0 when all of sudden my television screen froze. Since the game was so one sided and I really didn’t care if I caught the half time show or not, I didn’t freak out. I thought it was only my cable box, so I unplugged it and it “rebooted”, still there was no game. About an hour later the broadcast came back on. By then the game was pretty much over. As a gift to make up for my trouble, Time Warner is giving me and all subscribers a free movie or $5 gift card. Air Traffic Controller If you are interested in a high paying position with a lot of stress that goes along with it, then you may want to check out the following. The nine month training academy is held in Oklahoma City and you must be open to being placed in any part of the USA. For more information go to the FAA website.
