In the Rose City Classic at Maranatha High By Joe Snyder Leuzinger High’s young boys’ basketball team finished the Beverly Hills Tournament in 14th place after losing a 59-55 overtime contest to Brentwood School in the 13th place final last Saturday. The Olympians, who fell to 3-5, held an eight-point halftime lead at 28-20 at halftime, but saw the Eagles outscore them 19-9 in the third quarter to grab a 39-37 edge. Leuzinger came back to outscore Brentwood (4-4) 16-14 that included a three-point basket by Rodrigo Saldana with 15 seconds left in regulation. The Eagles missed a go-ahead shot as Leuzinger rebounded but the Olympians’ Terell Williams missed a layup at the buzzer that sent the contest in the overtime with the game tied at 53.The four-minute overtime period saw Leuzinger muster just two points as Brentwood scored six as the Eagles prevailed. “This was a tough tournament,” Leuzinger first year head coach Arturo Jones said. “Our goal was to go 2-2. We had a missed layup at the end of regulation and we lost the game. This was a winnable game for us.” Davion Crowder led the Olympians with 14 points, followed by Kavon Fair and Tyler Ridley, each with 10. Terell Williams added eight points. The Olympians went 1-3 in the classic with their only win over Los Angeles- Palms District Hamilton 49-44 last Thursday. Against the Yankees (0-4), Leuzinger jumped out to a 16-5 first quarter lead but Hamilton in Pasadena two weeks ago, Leuzinger split four games. The Olympians finished seventh in the classic by topping John Muir High of Pasadena 49-44 on December 5. Damani Washington sparked Leuzinger with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Williams contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Olympians hosted Hawthorne in their cross-town rivalry last Tuesday. Leuzinger, then, will play in the Oaks Christian Tournament in Westlake Village, beginning Saturday at 4:45 p.m. against John Burroughs High from Burbank. Next Monday, the Olympians face Cleveland High from Reseda at 3:15 p.m., then will take on San Gabriel Academy Tuesday at 5 p.m. The finals are next Wednesday. Hawthorne Wins One of Three at Artesia After winning the Los Angeles Harbor Classic during Thanksgiving Week, Hawthorne High’s boys’ basketball team found the Artesia Tournament tougher as it took just one of four games for 14th place in the 16-team classic. The Cougars began the tournament on December 7 with a 58-49 loss to Marina High from Huntington Beach. A day later, Hawthorne fell to North Torrance 58-52. Last Friday, the Cougars topped Locke High from South L.A. 60-55, but Hawthorne fell to South Gate 59-54 in the 13th place game on Saturday. Hawthorne took a 30-20 lead but saw North outscore the Cougars 38-22 in the second half to pull out the game. After visiting cross town rival Leuzinger last Tuesday, Hawthorne (4-3) hosts Vista del Lago from Moreno Valley in a non-league game on Friday at 6:30 p.m. before taking off to Sacramento for a tournament, opening against Granite Bay Saturday at 9 p.m. The tournament runs through next Wednesday. Lawndale Falls in Final After advancing to the CIF-Southern Section Division IIAA and Southern California Regional Division II finals last season, Lawndale High’s boys’ basketball team is faced with rebuilding but started well by placing second in the Blue Pride Tournament last week at Montebello High. The Cardinals (3-1) began the classic by crushing Aspire Ollin University Prep from Huntington Park with a school record 126 points to 29 on December 9. The previous was 114 in 2006 when Lawndale lost a wild game to North Torrance 129-114. Last Thursday, the Cardinals defeated host Montebello 55-40. On Friday, Lawndale outlasted Temple City 67-66, then lost the final to Hacienda Heights Los Altos 69-62 on Saturday. Lawndale travels to Sacramento to play in the St. Hope Elite Hoop Classic beginning on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against Oak Ridge from El Dorado Hills. The classic lasts through next Wednesday.•
