December 1, 2016 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings News for the City of Good Neighbors from City Clerk Huber SENIORS CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON – THIS FRIDAY The annual Seniors Christmas Luncheon will be held this Friday, December 2 at noon at the Memorial Center. All seniors are invited to enjoy a great lunch and a lot of good social time during this special time of the year. THE HAWTHORNE MALL PROPERTY WILL BE DEVELOPED I do not know why other news outlets, like that daily Torrance paper, did not pick up on the importance of what happened at last Tuesday’s city council meeting but here is my write up on the Magnitude LAX project: At their regular November 22nd meeting, the Hawthorne City Council signed off on the first phase of development for the vacant mall property located on Hawthorne Blvd. The entire 500 million dollar project was presented to the Council and the public with a presentation made by the Charles Company and owner Arman Gabay. It calls for a mixed used concept. There will be retail, entertainment, residential, and office space. There is room for 12 restaurants, a movie theater and a bowling alley included in the master plan. Secured parking for both retail and residential use have been built in. According to City Manager, Arnie Shadbehr, who was the key to the city’s partnership with the development group, the ground breaking is scheduled for February or March of this coming year. The Hawthorne Plaza Mall opened in 1977 and only stayed in operation for 21 years. The construction of the Plaza Mall replaced three plazas that formed the heart of downtown Hawthorne. It was hailed as a jewel that would propel the City of Good Neighbors into prosperous times along with neighboring cities that had large, shopping malls. Now, almost forty years later, we can look forward to a new beginning with all of the latest amenities being planned for this “blockbuster on the boulevard”. Construction for the entire project will take approximately five years. Finally, we won’t have to answer the question, “What is happening with the Mall?” The curse is over! The Cubs win the World Series! Hawthorne Comes Back to Life! HOSPITAL I spent a few hours this past weekend up at Centinela Hospital in Inglewood attending to my mother-in-law who fell and shattered her leg just below the hip last Wednesday evening. The doctors gave her medications so that she could cope with the pain following major surgery. The surgeon inserted a metal rod beside her femur bone along with three large screws to stabilize it. The meds do help with the pain, but they also bring about some side affects that make your brain react a little abnormally. While in this condition, we asked her how she really felt about her son-in-law, the city clerk. She responded by implying that he has had a few too many cold ones and that he sure is a “lucky guy” to be married all of these years to her beautiful daughter, the old lady. This really wasn’t anything I have not heard in the past. After 37 years of marriage, I think the old lady and her mother are kind of stuck with me. Regardless of my shortcomings, it’s been wonderful living just a mile away from my dear, German mother-in-law. Maybe some day they will accept me for who I am, the half-crazy city clerk. (By the way, someone asked me if my wife minded being call the old lady. I said she loves it. They told me she was a “keeper”.) NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE To be honest, I have not read a lot of poetry but I stumbled across a quote from our city’s namesake the other day. Mr. Hawthorne wrote: “Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.” I read the quote over several times and found myself really agreeing with what he was saying. So much of the time in our lives is spent working, searching, and striving after an endless list of things that we think will bring us happiness. We work and work and work some more but we really never reach that place of real happiness. Sometimes that happy feeling just comes to us when we are doing nothing. Maybe my “have a cold one” advice is simply that. Relax, stop killing yourself trying to find happiness. As long as you have a roof over your head, food on the table, and cold ones in the ice box life is good. • Classifieds The deadline for Classified Ad submission and payment is Noon on Tuesday to appear in Thursday’s paper.
