Next Tuesday, November 3, is Election Day here in the city of Hawthorne. This is the day when you can have a say in who runs our city. Your vote does matter. With only 3 or 4 thousand people expected to vote, the races may be determined by less than 100 votes. The polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. So, you have no excuse, we need you to participate in our democratic process. If you don’t know who to vote for, seek out a trusted friend who knows the candidates and listen to what they have to say. The city council members and mayor have much more of an impact on your life than the president or congress of the US. Local decisions are being made all the time that really does shape the direction our city goes. So, remember to VOTE this coming Tuesday. 0FREE Rain Barrels Come on down to the City Hall parking lot this Saturday, October 31st and you will be able to pick up a free rain barrel. Reformation Day – Faith Alone October 31st is also known as Reformation Day in our Protestant churches. 498 years ago in Wittenberg, Germany a little known Catholic monk named Martin Luther nailed a list of 95 items that he wanted to debate on the door of the Castle Church. Soon, that list was printed and distributed all over Germany and most of Europe. It signaled much more than a reform of the Roman Catholic Church. Once the “common people” could read the Bible and become literate, there was no stopping this new found freedom. Luther’s teachings were based solely on scripture and emphasized that us sinners are made right with God by “faith alone”, not by our good deeds or acts of kindness. Faith in Jesus Christ and his atoning death and resurrection is what saves us. The Reformation was a time to return to the truth found in God’s Word. This freedom found in Jesus, sets us free to be in service to him but also to enjoy the good things God has given to us. Some of you know what I’m leading to. Luther once said, “Whoever drinks beer, he is quick to sleep; whoever sleeps long, does not sin; whoever does not sin, enters Heaven! Thus, let us drink beer!” --- My interpretation: “Have a cold one, go to heaven!” Contact ME Email me at: norbhuber@gmail.com • Classifieds The deadline for Classified Ad submission and payment is Noon on Tuesday to appear in Thursday’s paper.
