October 20, 2016 Page 5 Hawthorne Remains Undefeated in League Play; Leuzinger defeats North Torrance By Eric Ramos, Photos by Dirk Dewachter Hawthorne quarterback Marte Mapu rushed for three touchdowns while adding two touchdowns passing, to help lead the Cougars to 40-28 Ocean League win over Santa Monica last Friday. The Cougars got on the board first when senior wide receiver Carlos Jacobo returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. After a Santa Monica touchdown, Mapu threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jacobo for a 13-6 lead. Hawthorne’s defense forced Santa Monica to turn the ball over on downs. On the ensuing drive, Mapu connected with wide receiver Justice Powers for a 39-yard touchdown with just under a minute left in the second quarter. The Cougars took a 19-6 into halftime. Santa Monica got a boost in the third quarter when they returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown to trim the lead, 19-12. Mapu responded with an 8-yard touchdown run to gibe the Cougars a 26-12 lead with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. Mapu wasn’t done as he scored on a 15-yard touchdown run to extend the Cougars’ lead, 33-12, and put the game out of reach. Santa Monica running back Antonio Holley added a 5-yard touchdown run. Mapu scored his fifth touchdown of the game on a 3-yard run. Hawthorne (3-4, 2-0) will host Culver City Friday at 7 p.m. Lawndale vs. Culver City Lawndale sophomore running back Jordan Leuzinger’s Tyler Jackson (Leuzinger No. 74) fights off North’s Seth Sickle (North Torrance No. 35) at the line of scrimmage in the opening quarter of play Wilmore rushed for 339 yards on 36 carries and three touchdowns to help the Cardinals to a 45-33 Ocean League win over Culver City last Friday. Culver City didn’t have an answer the Cardinals potent rushing attack as quarterback Jalen Hamler added three rushing touchdowns. Lawndale is in the driver seat as they take first place in the Ocean League with a big game against El Segundo waiting on Friday. Wilmore gave the Cardinals an early 7-0 lead on a 35-yard touchdown run. Charles Ross hauled in an 18-yard touchdown to even the score for Culver City, 7-7. Wilmore added touchdown runs of seven and 47 yards to give Lawndale a 21-7 lead in the first quarter. After a Culver City field goal, Hamler scored two rushing touchdowns in the second quarter to give Lawndale a 35-10 lead in the with two minutes remaining in the second quarter. Culver City quarterback Jonathan Martin completed 26 of 46 passes for 294 yards while adding four touchdowns with two interceptions. Lawndale will prepare for a tough Ocean League showdown with host El Segundo Friday at 7 p.m. Leuzinger vs. North Torrance Leuzingers’ offense was on display as they rolled past visiting North Torrance, 68-28, last Friday. The Olympians remain undefeated in the Pioneer League. Kaymen Cureton led Demontti Peoples (Leuzinger No. 5) lifts North’s JJ Belmontes (North Torrance No. 10) after he caught a pass in the second quarter of play. Leuzinger with four touchdown passes while running back Daniel Carmicle added two rushing touchdowns. Cureton got Leuzinger on the board early when he connected with tight end Danthony Jones for a 32-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Following a North Torrance punt, Tariq Culpepper returned the punt 88 yards for a touchdown to give Leuzinger a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Torrance added a touchdown before Elijah Myles scores from 2 yards out to extend the Olympians lead, 21-6. North tries a double pass but is intercepted by J.J Belmontes. Cureton capitalizes on the turnover with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Culpepper to give Leuzinger a 28-6 lead in the first quarter. Cureton completed 10 of 14 passes for 176 yards. Carmicle finished with 115 yards rushing on 15 carries. Culpepper added 143 all-purpose yards. Leuzinger will play Torrance Friday at 7 p.m. Inglewood vs. Peninsula Inglewoods’ offense stalled in a close 8-6 Bay League loss to Peninsula last Friday. The game remained scoreless through three quarters as both teams couldn’t muster any points on offense. Marcello Merola put Peninsula on the board with a 2-yard touchdown run. Inglewood was led by running back Tashawn White, who rushed for 106 yards on 18 carries. The Sentinals remain winless in league play but will look to rebound when they host Mira Costa Friday at 7 p.m. • Kaymen Cureton (Leuzinger No. 1) scored four touchdowns and Daniel Carmicle (Leuzinger No. 7) added two touchdowns in Leuzinger’s 68-28 win over visiting North Malik Welch (North Torrance No. 1) catches a long pass from Sean Sigala (North Torrance No. 7) as Leuzinger’s Antonio Hunt (Leuzinger No. 8) reaches for the ball at the start of the third quarter.
