October 13, 2016 Page 5 Hawthorne Rolls Past Beverly Hills In League Opener By Eric Ramos Photos by Dirk Dewachter Hawthorne opened Ocean League play with a dominating 41-0 win over host Beverly Hills last Friday. Senior quarterback Marte Mapu led the way as he threw three touchdowns while the defense shut out the Normans’ offense to secure the win and snap a three-game losing streak. Hawthorne got on the board after Mapu connected with Justice Powers on 45-yard touchdown to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. After Beverly Hills turned the ball over on downs, Mapu went to work and found Carlos Jacobo for a 40-yard touchdown. On Beverly Hills’ next possession, Jacobo intercepts the pass and races 30 yards for the score to extend the Cougars’ lead, 21-0, in the second quarter. Mapu connected with Jacobo again, this time on a 35-yard touchdown to give Hawthorne a 28-0 lead going into halftime. Hawthorne put the game out of reach on running back Eric Fosters’ 17-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Foster added a 7-yard touchdown run with four minutes left in the game. The Normans were shut out and drop to 0-6 overall on the season. The Cougars improve to 2-4 on the season and 1-0 in league play. Hawthorne will travel to Santa Monica for an Ocean League matchup Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Lawndale vs. Santa Monica Lawndale was able to move the ball with ease as they tallied 536 yards of total offense in a 49-20 Ocean League win over Santa Monica last Friday. The Caridinals were led by sophomore running back Jordan Wilmore who rushed for 247 yards and two touchdowns. On the opening drive for Lawndale, junior quarterback Jalen Hamler hit wide receiver Hunter Williams in the corner of the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown to give the Cardinals an early 7-0 lead. Hamler added an 8-yard touchdown run on a scramble in which he juked multiple defenders to get into the end zone. Hamler completed 13 of 22 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns while adding two rushing touchdowns. Wilmore scored from 3 yards out to give Lawndale a 21-0 lead. With just over a minute left in the second quarter, Hamler hit Amhir Wilson for a 93- yard touchdown. Santa Monica marched down the field in 33 seconds and Tony Dancy scored from 5 yards out to cut the Cardinals’ lead, 28-7, going into halftime. Lawndales’ defense held the Vikings to 80 total yards in the first half. Hamler scored his second rushing touchdown on a 15-yard run to extend the Cardinals’ lead, 35-7, in the fourth quarter. Senior running back Justin Whitaker rips off a 42-yard touchdown run to give Lawndale a commanding 42-14 lead with 6:02 left in the fourth quarter. Whitaker finished with 68 yards on eight carries and a touchdown. Lawndale (3-3, 1-0) will host Ocean League foe Culver City Friday at 7 p.m. Inglewood vs. Palos Verdes The Sentinels got off to a rough start in Bay League play as they were shutout in a 54-0 loss to Palos Verdes last Friday. The Sea Kings held Inglewoods’ ground game in check all night, allowing only five total rushing yards while adding two interceptions and three sacks. On Inglewoods’ first drive of the game, quarterback junior quarterback Carlos Hernandez was intercepted by Adison Umrarong. Palos Verdes capitalized on the turnover when Umrarong scored on 51-yard touchdown run. Inglewood didn’t have an answer for the Sea Kings’ offense as they were able to score on all nine of its offensive possessions. Inglewood trailed 41-0 at halftime and was never able to get the offense on track. Palos Verdes dominated in every facet of the game. Inglewood (3-3, 0-1) will look to rebound from the loss when they host Peninsula Friday at 7 p.m. • Jose Gomez (No. 22) of Santa Monica solo-tackles Lawndale’s Jordan Wilmore (Lawndale No. 1) at midfield.
