It starts with individuals working together and building bridges of understanding and communication. Hawthorne has taken the challenge with several other cities in SoCal to bring direction to the lives of our young people. President Obama issued a challenge to cities and communities to work in an organized fashion under a program called, “My Brother’s Keeper”. It seeks to organize all the agencies, organizations and individuals in a united effort to help our youth. Sometimes we see our teens fall through the cracks. Sometimes without parental guidance, they make wrong choices. Efforts like the Big Brother and Big Sister programs have helped. Schools and individual teachers play a big part in influencing our youth to make right choices. Police agencies have athletic programs to keep youth active in a positive activity. All of these programs will be asked to assist us as we try to make a difference. A “My Brother’s Keeper” Summit will be held at Hawthorne High School’s cafeteria on Tuesday, October 18th from 6 to 8 p.m. If you just wish to find out what is going on, or want to get involved, plan to attend this very worthwhile summit meeting. “Brew-It-Yourself” Cold Ones I read where there is a brewery in Torrance that allows you to brew your own cold one. The article says that many people desire to know exactly how their beverage is made. To be honest with you, I don’t really care how the heck my cold ones are brewed. I really don’t have the time to sit around and brew my cold ones. Just give me the glass, mug or stein and fill it up. This whole “brew your own” thing kind of reminds me of taking a tour of one of those big, national brand breweries. While on vacation in the Midwest, all I wanted was the free samples at the end of the tour. The big, Klondike horses are cute, the Miller sponsored race car is nice to view, the bottling processes are interesting, but really after climbing around the brewing warehouses and listening to some cute tour guide chat about the secret ingredients that makes their beer the “king of beers”, all I really wanted to do was to sit down and enjoy one of their products. There are those who are fanatics when it comes to beer. A real connoisseur of beer would be a “cicerone”. According to Wikipedia, a cicerone is “a person who possesses the knowledge and skills to guide those interested in beer culture, including its historic and artistic aspects”. A friend from my church has been a cicerone for years. He and his partners are now opening up their own craft brewery in Gardena. He brought over a “growler” full of their first trial batch of beer. He instructed me on what type of glass to use and how to pour the liquid into the glass. Why so technical? Why make life difficult? Keep it simple. Wake up, go to work, be nice to others, keep your old lady happy, love God, don’t get caught with a hot mic on, and finally just relax and have a cold one. If you can’t do any of the above, just skip to the last one and repeat it as many times as you need to. Enjoy life my friends, stay thirsty. • Contact email: norbhuber@gmail.com (If you do enjoy my weekly column, please shoot me an email. I love to hear from my readers.)
