The Cardinals already led 20-0 at halftime, then let loose for 28 third quarter points to turn the contest into a rout. Fourth-year starting quarterback Chris Murray continued to shine by rushing for three touchdowns and passing for another. He started Lawndale’s scoring with a 32-yard run in the first quarter, then added a 67-yarder to increase the Cardinals’ lead to 14-0 midway in the second period. With 1:27 left before halftime, Murray connected with receiver Bryant Perkinson for a 46-yard TD increasing Lawndale’s lead to 20 points. The Cardinals finished off the Panthers, who fell to 1-3, in the third period. Their quarter scoring began on a 15-yard touchdown run from Murray. With 5:56 remaining, defensive back Zach Cooper picked off a pass from Peninsula quarterback Daniel Schubert and returned the ball 55 yards for the score. Terrell Williams made it 41-0 when he completed a Lawndale drive on a two-yard run. Lawndale capped off the scoring on Perkinson’s 51-yard interception return. From there, the fourth quarter was on a mercy rule running clock and the Cardinals cleared the bench. After losing its season opener to South Torrance 33-21 on September 4 at home, Lawndale recorded its stunning upset over a very good Encino Crespi squad on September 11 at home and its momentum continued to build from there. The Cardinals proceeded to roll over visiting crosstown rival Leuzinger 42-14 on September 18 before its win over the Panthers, who are struggling with a rebuilding season. “We’re trying to get better,” Lawndale head coach Travis Clark said. “We must work harder and that’s what we did.” Clark said that the whole team is contributing and that’s what is needed for the Cardinals to win their first Ocean League championship. Lawndale has not won a league title since said. “Everybody is doing better.” For Lawndale, it is its first shutout of the season as the Cardinals limited Peninsula to just 82 total yards on offense. Murray rushed for 103 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries and completed 11 of 18 painting passes for 170 yards and one TD. Lawndale will seek to finish non-league at 4-1 as it hosts winless Torrance (0-4) Friday at 7 p.m. The Tartars are coming off a 41-7 loss to El Segundo last Friday at Torrance’s Zamperini Field. Rouseborgh completed 14 of 31 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted once. Rouseborgh also ran for 44 yards on seven carries.
