The monthlong observation began in 1968 as a one-week acknowledgement titled Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson. In 1988 President Ronald Reagan extended the event to stretch for an entire month, with Sept. 15, as day one because it is the anniversary of independence for the countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico’s and Chile’s independence days falling on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18. Hosting the event will be City Mayor James T. Butts as well as his colleagues on the city council, department heads and other staff members responsible for the city’s day-to-day operations. Each year the festival has grown in vendor and performer participation, as well as community involvement, which led to the addition of the classic car show. The festival is free and open to the public.
