July 23, 2015 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings News for the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ From City Clerk Norb Huber Historic Tour of Thunder, Lightening and Rain in July Who would have thunk it? A lightening storm in the middle of July in Hawthorne? Yes, that was a real rain storm last Saturday. We had to conclude our Good Neighbors Day activities a little earl due to the rare storm. Luckily the rain was light for most of the morning for our annual car show and music fest. Other than the weather, we had a great event. The three bands were outstanding. Woodie and the Longboards performed some Beach Boys songs and it was hard to tell the difference in their sound and the real Boys. We had the addition of an art walk this year. The car guys showed up early and stayed late. All and all, everyone who attended seemed to enjoy themselves. Car Show Winners Here are the winners of the 5th Annual Good Neighbors Day Car Show: Pre-40’s - Charles Rundle - ’33 Chevy Best of 40’s - Frank Fernandez – ’40 Mercury Convertible Best of 50’s – Paul Sepulveda - ’56 Chevy (Hawthorne PD car) Best of ‘60’s – Les Ingram - ’67 Camaro Best of ‘70’s – L. Minor - ’70 Plymouth Barracuda People’s Choice - Cesar Molino - ’40 Chevy Pickup Best of Show - Frank Fernandez – ’40 Mercury Convertible Car Club Championship - Classic Lowriders Thank you to all of the car owners who entered their special vehicles this year. Kiwanis Carnival this weekend The Kiwanis Club of Hawthorne has been sponsoring either a parade/fair or carnival for over 60 years in Hawthorne. Some of you are old enough to remember the big parades that would march down Hawthorne Blvd. every July. At one time, the Hawthorne Parade was viewed as one of the largest in all of Southern California, second only to the Rose Parade held annually on New Year’s Day in Pasadena. Due to the high price of putting a parade together, the Kiwanis Club has settled upon hosting a carnival only these days. This year the carnival will be held from July 23-26 at the Betty Ainsworth parking lot. You will see the carnival rides set up just East of the Memorial Center on El Segundo Blvd. All funds raised by the Club go back into the community to help support worthy causes. National Night Out – Tuesday, August 4 Several of the homeowners associations of Hawthorne have come together to help coordinate our National Night Out event that will be held at the civic center on the evening of Tuesday, August 4. Free food is promised and presentations by our police and fire departments are on the schedule. Our civic center is located in front of city hall on 126th Street. Come out and help us say NO to crime and YES to Good Neighbors. The “C” Word I have been sipping Gatorade and avoiding all solid food today. It’s the day before a procedure that comes around every five years. If you are over fifty, you know what procedure I’m talking about. It starts with a “c” and it’s one method used for early detection of the big “C” word. The preparation for a colonoscopy is worse than the actual procedure. It’s not too enjoyable cleaning yourself out. Early detection of Cancer makes it all worth it. Within the 11 cities serviced (Carson, El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Lawndale, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Lomita and Torrance), the SBWIB accomplishes its goals through partnerships with local committees handling business and economic development, One-Stop locations, performance and evaluation, as well as a Youth Development Council.  Through workforce investment funds, the SBWIB offers dislocated workers with free training programs and job-searching resources. Job-searching equipment, as well as seminars, workshops and job placement assistance are available at the four One-Stop Business & Career Centers (Gardena, Inglewood, Carson and Torrance). The SBWIB assists businesses through an innovative Rapid Response Program geared towards layoff aversion. Parker Hannifin Corporation’s Carson facility is a recent success story. An initial meeting revealed that nearly 60 employees lacked sufficient English skills and were facing potential layoff. A layoff aversion plan was formulated that resulted in the SBWIB approaching a local adult school partner to assess the employees’ English skill levels and set up on-site training. Since September, the affected employees have been attending Business English classes three days a week with several of those individuals now being considered for promotions. Recruitment assistance, pre-screening of applicants, On-The-Job training and Transitional Subsidized Employment (TSE) are other programs available to local companies and small businesses. The SBWIB also prepares youth for entry into the workforce by emphasizing education and services that promote relevant workplace skills and experiences leading to industry-recognized credentials and career pathway employment, including apprenticeships. Special emphasis is aimed at the reengagement of disconnected youth through intervention and prevention services. The SBWIB is one of the highest performing Workforce Investment Boards (WIB) in the state and is often recognized by the California Workforce Investment Board (CWIB) for its achievements. Continuous collaborations with business, economic development, education, government, labor and community organizations, helps the SBWIB provide a dynamic, efficient and effective workforce development system, ensuring a skilled workforce and vibrant economy in the South Bay Area.
