Because of political or societal changes a word that we have used for a long time with one meaning now has become associated with something totally different. An example of this would be one of our streets on the west side of Hawthorne. Isis Avenue has been a north/ south running street from Los Angeles down to Lawndale for over 70 years. Isis is the name of a Greek goddess. Here is what Wickipedia has to say: “Isis was worshipped as the ideal mother and wife as well as the patroness of nature and magic. She was the friend of slaves, sinners, artisans and the downtrodden, but she also listened to the prayers of the wealthy.” ISIS today is the acronym for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and is a Salafi jihadist militant group that follows a fundamentalist, Wahhabi doctrine of Sunni Islam. There are some Hawthorne residents who would wish to change the name of their street. It brings back memories of the successful efforts by some who fought hard to change the name of Compton Blvd that ran through Lawndale and Hawthorne to Marine Avenue. I’m surprised that Rancho Palos Verdes people have not launched a campaign to change Hawthorne Blvd to Rocking Horse Road or Trump Trail. Thank You Good Neighbors It was a great day in and for Hawthorne last Saturday. The attendance at Good Neighbors Day VI was outstanding. The car show broke a record for most car in the show. The art walk had more artist displaying their work. The three featured bands were well received and “a little taste of Hawthorne” was sold out in a matter of a couple of hours. Thank you for coming out to show your support, it seemed like everyone was having a great time. Over 75 people took the tour of the old HPD jail. It’s not too often that you get to take a look inside a detention facility unless of course you are there for the wrong reason. We hope to build on this year’s success by making the event bigger and better next year. If you would like to be part of the GND committee and assist us with this annual festival just shoot me an email or better yet come over to the Hawthorne Museum next Monday at 6 p.m. We are having a GND BBQ and planning meeting. Stop by and help us make Hawthorne better. Ramona Neighborhood Picnic Saturday, July 30 The Ramona Neighborhood Association invites you to attend their annual picnic on Saturday, July 30 at Ramona Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free hot dogs for all who care to join the RNA with a $10 annual membership fee. There are games planned for the kids and the park’s wading pool will be filled and ready for the little ones. It’s always a nice event to get to know your neighbors and enjoy some food and fun. Why are we tearing up Hawthorne Blvd Again? I’ve been asked by several people, why the City is wasting our money on tearing up the Boulevard again. First, the City’s Public Works Department won a competitive grant to obtain the money to do the work. The renovation work is from 120th Street south to El Segundo Blvd. It will include filtration tanks that will filter runoff water to cleanse it before it runs into the ocean. In addition the work is being done with the anticipation of the Hawthorne Mall property being developed in the near future. With hotels going in at the civic center area, the main thoroughfare bisecting our city will be looking good for all of our out-of-town visitors. We are doing our best to make Hawthorne look appealing for those who want to live, work and stay in our fine city. National Night Out Please mark on your calendars, Tuesday August 2 for National Night Out. This annual nationwide event was established several years ago to bring neighborhoods and law enforcement together. With everything that is going on these days, there is no better time to show our support for the men and women in blue. We have a special person on our police force who has done so much for our community and our nation by sharing his very personal feelings in articles publish in the Huffington Post. Sergeant Chris Cognac recently wrote an article entitled, “I wanted to quit, until the donuts came.” It really gives us a brief look at the challenges that a law enforcement officer face now. Do a Google search. It’s well worth the time to read the article. City of Hawthorne Hosts Public Workshop for Airport Noise Study Update On July 27, the public is invited to attend a community workshop on the federal noise study that the City of Hawthorne is conducting at Hawthorne Municipal Airport. This is an update to the Airport’s noise study completed in 1990. Funding for the noise study is provided by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the City of Hawthorne. The workshop will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Venus Room of the City of Hawthorne Memorial Center, 3901 W. El Segundo Blvd., Hawthorne. The workshops are designed to allow citizens to individually express their concerns, provide input, and learn more about the process of noise compatibility planning surrounding the Hawthorne Municipal Airport A project website is available for the community to stay informed and download project documentation and meeting notices.
