Reconstruction will include the improvement of street surfaces, updating all traffic lanes and signals to current city standards: in addition to enhancing safety for pedestrians [complying with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements] the efforts will improve traffic conditions by reducing congestion along the Boulevard. The second phase also includes storm water improvements and landscape/green street improvements. “Phase I is currently under construction and includes the following limits of construction: from La Cienega Boulevard to Inglewood Avenue and from Doty Avenue to Van Ness Avenue,” states the staff report signed by Public Works Director Louis A. Atwell. “Phase I began in November 2015 and is estimated to be completed by late summer 2017; whereas, construction for Phase II is expected to begin in winter 2016-2017 and end in summer 2018.” The city clerk’s office distributed bid invitations to five construction trade publications on Feb. 25; by April 6 the office received three bids from three southland contractors: Sully-Miller Contracting, Co. However, all three bids were over the city’s available budget, with the lowest bid being more expensive by $1,000,000. “The Public Works Department staff and the City’s consultant team are currently investigating ways to reduce project costs without impacting the quality of the improvement,” concludes the staff report. • Inside This Issue Certified & Licensed Professionals.......................4 Classifieds............................3 Community Briefs...............3 Film Review..........................2 Hawthorne Happenings....3 Legals................................ 5-7 Obituaries.............................2 Police Reports.....................2 Seniors..................................8 Sports....................................8 Weekend Forecast Friday Sunny 84˚/68˚ Saturday Sunny 86˚/69˚ Sunday Sunny 83˚/67˚
