June16, 2016 Page 3 Community Briefs Hawthorne Happenings From City Clerk Norb Huber Holly Park Pancake Breakfast This Saturday, June 18th the Holly Park Homeowners Association will be sponsoring a pancake breakfast to help raise funds for their scholarship fund. It will be held at Olivet Lutheran Church located just East of Crenshaw on Imperial Highway. Times for the event is from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Fathers This Sunday is Fathers Day. My father had a great influence on me. Both my father and grandfather were Lutheran pastors. When my father was up in the pulpit preaching, he was communicating God’s Word to me. As a youngster, he seemed like GOD to me. I never thought I could fill his shoes and follow in his footsteps. I became a teacher in Lutheran schools instead. It was with that same missionary mindset of wanting to help others that led me into the teaching/coaching profession and has motivated me for the past 39 years to continue to fight the good fight in our public schools. Almost every day, we are reminded of the sin that is in our world. We are surrounded by violence and death. I don’t know about you, but I have yet to find anything in this world that I can put my trust in besides Jesus Christ. My prayer is that my children would also come to that knowledge of this saving grace. My heavenly father forgives and loves me, I in turn forgive and love my children, my wife, my friends, neighbors and even my enemies in like fashion. May God bless all fathers this week end. Fireworks You talk about controversy, just mention the word “fireworks” in or around the City of Hawthorne and you are certain to get an ear full from neighbors fired up over the illegal discharge of high flying rockets or super loud M80s that boom across our properties so resounding that they scare the termites chewing away in our attics. The frustrating part of this mess is that there is very little the good neighbors of our community can do to stop this constant infringement upon our peace and quiet. Yes, it is illegal. Yes, the violators can be cited. No, it’s not easy to catch the violators “in the act”. The firing off of any type of fireworks is prohibited except for the safe and sane type that are sold by our nonprofits during the week prior to the 4th of July. Even those legal ones can only be shot off from 12 noon til 10 p.m. on the 4th. As usual, it is a small number of neighbors who make life miserable for the rest of us. Many dogs must be kept inside and our veterans suffering from their war experiences sometimes have to leave the area or take a vacation to escape the chaos. Our Hawthorne Police force has the inevitable job of trying their best to deal with a no win situation. Like any law, if a citizen can get away with breaking that law without being caught, the temptation is there to break it. To some, that’s what gives them a thrill. If you know of a location that is violating the law, please call the HPD desk or 911 and give them the address. They cannot respond to every report, but they will have the address for future reference. Living in the big city comes with a price. With 90,000 people living within 5+ square miles of each other, there are bound to be some “knuckle heads” or worse. Talent Search Good Neighbors Day will be held on Saturday, July 16th this year and the Historical Society is looking for “Hawthorne talent”. Here is your chance to show the world what you have. This could be your big start. If you ever have wanted to perform in front of an audience, please step right up onto our big stage and we will make you famous. The Boys, Marilyn, Russell Westbrook, and Gyasi all got their starts here in the City of Good Neighbors. It doesn’t matter what your talent is, we will find a place and time for you to perform. Sing, dance, skate, skip, roller blade, draw, recite a poem, crack a joke, or anything in between, we really want you to participate. Please contact us using my email below. The big event is only five weeks away, so start practicing. If you know of friends or relatives who want to perform, let them know. Garage bands are welcome. We look forward to a fun day this mid-summer. (Vendors and exhibitors are also invited to set up a table that day. If interested, do the same, contact me using my email.) Hawthorne “Moments” It’s amazing to me that Hawthorne is connected to the world in so many different ways. Just in the past two weeks, I can count four Hawthorne “moments” that are noteworthy. June 1st was Marilyn Monroe’s 90th birthday, some say her only real home was for a short few years living on present day 134th Street. On June 3rd, Mohammad Ali died. His daughter, Laila Ali is married to Curtus Conway, the star football quarterback from Hawthorne High School. On June 7th, Gyasi Zardes, who grew up in Hawthorne, was a starting forward for the victorious US national team in the COPA Cup match versus Costa Rica. My final Hawthorne connection came on a visit to the California Science Center in LA’s Exhibition Park with my granddaughter. We were standing in front of a jet and read that the Northrop T-38 Talon Jet Trainer was built in 1959 at the Northrop Field in Hawthorne. I told her that she might have been made in Hawthorne also. Being the curious, five year old that was asking all kinds of questions, I was waiting for her to ask, “How was I made papa?” I would have responded with, “God made you”. Her parents can go into more details at the appropriate time. • If you have a special, “Hawthorne Connection” that you would like to share with me, shoot me an email at norbhuber@gmail.com.
