Page 4 June 2, 2016 Animo Edges Rolling Hills Prep; Advances to Semis By Joe Snyder During the regular season, the Rolling Hills Prep baseball team from San Pedro was a nemesis to Animo Leadership High of Inglewood. The Huskies won both games from the Aztec-Eagles for the Mulholland League championship. Animo finished second in league behind Rolling Hills Prep. In the CIF-Southern Section Division VII quarterfinals last Friday at the Navy Field in Lomita, the Aztec-Eagles had their third shot at the playoffs’ third seeded Huskies. Rolling Hills Prep started out with two runs in the bottom of the third inning but Animo came back with three in the top of the fourth. After the Huskies came back to tie the game at three with a run in the bottom of the fourth, the Aztec-Eagles pushed in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh. Animo made it stand for a 4-3 victory and a spot in last Tuesday’s Division VII semifinals against Academy of Academic Excellence from Apple Valley at the Urban Youth Baseball Academy in Compton. Moe was sailing along with a one-hitter through three innings but Animo finally got to him in the fourth. The Aztec-Eagles tied the game on solo home runs by brothers Brian (junior) and Cesar (senior) Rocha. Later in the inning, Orojel singled home Saul Gutierrez to give Animo a 3-2 lead. The Huskies tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. I told them to just get those little plays.” The Aztec-Eagles were among the teams that made things hard for the Huskies in the playoffs. It is the third consecutive season that Rolling Hills Prep was eliminated in the quarterfinals. “We had a great season, Rolling Hills Prep head coach Will Bougille said. “We went undefeated in league. Animo played hard.” In the second round on May 24 in San Jacinto, Animo crushed host San Jacinto Valley Academy 20-1. Franco had a big game hitting two home runs that included a grand slam and a three-run home run. He drove in eight runs as he also had a run scoring single. The Aztec-Eagles will seek their second Southern Section title. They won the Division VII title in 2012.
