The official diagnosis was “comminuted non-displaced fracture of the proximal right tibia and fibula,” but all I knew was that it really hurt. I had surgery to repair my leg on March 14 and since I was anesthetized, they also spayed me. I’m very happy to report that at my two-month check-up, the post-op X-rays revealed that my fracture has healed. Yay! The veterinarian said it is possible that the plate may need to be removed in about three months, but right now we’re just keeping an eye on it. Remarkably, the injury hasn’t slowed me down a bit and I’m quite active. I’m a 10-pound, adorably cute dynamo who would most likely do best in a home with another dog. My name is Marlee and I’m a one-year old female Schnoodle, That’s a Miniature Schnauzer/ Poodle mix. One evening I’m out the door to meet a friend and the next thing I know I’m at an LA area shelter being called a stray. Apparently, although I can’t remember a thing, I was hit by a car resulting in a break to my rear right leg. The MSFR folks rescued me and it was off to their veterinarian to see if decided to check out my neighborhood and then couldn’t find my way back home. I lived on the streets for quite awhile finding shelter wherever I could, like under vehicles and fields. While on my own, I also acquired some ‘hitchhikers’ along the way. I finally gave in and let animal control relocate me to an LA area shelter where I was classified as a stray. I have to admit that living on the street did me no favors. I was a filthy, matted mess with tons of ticks and fleas who had hitched a ride on me. It was so bad that my natural coat, a silky white with light beige/ brown high lights, appeared to be a nasty gray. I also had a parasite, coccidia, which was treatable and I’m so done with that. Even after multiple shampoos to rid me of my motor oil ‘conditioner,’ fleas and ticks, I still have many little scabs as reminders of my last adventure. Considering all that I’ve been through, excuse me if I was super shy and skittish. Patience, TLC and a little chicken helped bring me around to my naturally, high-energy, playful, loveable, sweet self. I do require some work on walking while on leash (something totally foreign to me), but I’m getting there. My name is Liam and I’m a two-year old Poodle/Bichon mix, but I have that Bichon face that will melt your heart. Being a fun guy, I went out alone to do a little exploring. I wasn’t worried about getting lost because I had identification and I was micro-chipped. Sure enough, I ended up as a stray of all things at the local LA County shelter. I found out that my chip was never registered and when the shelter, using the information on my identification, contacted my owners, they didn’t want me. I don’t know why--I’m a great guy. Then a member of the public was supposed to adopt me, but never showed up and neither did the other three backup adopters. That’s a total of five rejections and four of the people never even met me! Talk about feeling unloved. It might have been because I caught kennel cough, but that’s easy to cure and I’m better than ever now--just missing a family to love and love me in return. I’ve been neutered, had my dental, I get along great with other dogs and I’m a real sweetheart. In a medium soup pot, heat the oil over medium low heat. 2. Add your diced pancetta to the pan and cook for 2 minutes. 3. “Messipe” moment: Roll up your sleeves, it’s time to get messy! Cover and cook for 15 minutes more (aka walk away till it’s done). Take turns tasting for salt and pepper and serve hot. Cleanup tip: If sauce spills, quickly drop some flour on the spill to stop the spill from spreading. This way, you can keep cooking and not worry about cleaning up the mess right away. When you’re ready, fill a spray bottle with warm water and a few drops of Palmolive Ultra Strength dish liquid. Let the kids squirt the bottle over the mess ... or maybe even at each other!
