Simple as that and free!!! shooting that killed Kisha Michael and Marquintan Sandlin as they slept in their car back in February of 2016. The ceremony opened and continued as planned until the veterans present at the event were given the opportunity to introduce themselves. One of the attendees holding a sign in support of Michael and Sandlin is a former United States Marine and was bypassed by the person in control of the microphone. It was not clear if the omission was intentional, but local activist Michael Wilson of the Youth Justice Coalition immediately spoke up and demanded that the overlooked veteran be allowed to speak. After a minute of microphone silence and increased rumblings among the attendees, Congresswoman Maxine Waters stepped down from the stage, approached Wilson and invited him to sit with her for the remainder of the ceremony with the promise of speaking one-on-one at the end. “Before I begin my remarks to you today, I want to say to those who are here bringing attention to the concerns about loss of life, I want to say that we are here to honor those men and women who died in service for this country--we recognize that their lives mattered and that black lives matter,” said the Congresswoman. “We have in this audience men and women who have fought for this country. They are mothers and they are fathers, they are sisters and they are brothers, and they understand what justice and equality is all about.” The Congresswoman’s message aimed at building an atmosphere of cooperation between the citizens demanding justices for Michael and Sandlin, and between other residents, elected officials and the city’s police department. “Many of these [men and women] who served for our country came back to America and didn’t have jobs, didn’t have healthcare and didn’t have housing to live in, but they fought and they struggled and they fought oftentimes against power-- including members of Congress--for justice in this country,” Waters said. “They believe in standing up for what is right, so I want you to know that you are welcomed here today.” First known as Decoration Day, the tradition of honoring the nation’s fallen soldiers dates back to the end of the Civil War and became the modern-day holiday celebrated across the country in 1971. Unofficially, the somber national holiday also marks the beginning of the summer season. “We gather here every year to pay our respect to those who have served and paid the ultimate sacrifice, and those that were wounded in preservation of our liberty,” said See City Council page 8 Inside This Issue Certified & Licensed Professionals.......................8 Classifieds............................3 Community Briefs...............2 Food.......................................5 Hawthorne Happenings....3 Legals............................4, 6-7 Pets........................................5 Weekend Forecast Friday Mostly Sunny 70˚/61˚ Saturday Sunny 72˚/60˚ Sunday Mostly Sunny 70˚/60˚
