May 19, 2016 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings News for the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ From City Clerk Norb Huber Community K-9 Dinner The Hawthorne President’s Council in collaboration with the Hawthorne Police Department will sponsor our annual Community BBQ Dinner to raise funds for the HPD’s K-9 Unit. The date is Thursday, May 26th starting at 5 p.m. at the Memorial Center. Adults are $5 and children are $2.50. It’s great to come together as a community and help support our HPD. In attendance each year are some of the German shepherd dogs that make up our K-9 unit. The dogs have been trained to help their partners at various crime scenes. They usually show off their talents for all in attendance. Historical Society Meeting The next open meeting of the Hawthorne Historical Society will be held on Monday, May 23 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Hawthorne Museum. By attending you will meet some of your neighbors, get to know what Hawthorne was like and become more involved with your community. We need you to be involved. Make a point to try to make our next meeting. Coffee and cookies are available for your nutrition. Good Neighbors Day Coming this Summer The 6th Annual Good Neighbors Day is planned for Saturday, July 16th at the civic center area. We want to make this year’s edition bigger and better. We are inviting any Hawthorne residents with talent or with some talent, to contact us about performing on that day. We are particularly looking to involve our young people in our program. If you know of a local band that is practicing in their garage and wants an opportunity to perform, this would be their chance. Please email me if you know of anyone who would like to participate. My email is: norbhuber@ gmail.com Rabies Clinic The City of Hawthorne will once again offer a Rabies Clinic to all residents on Saturday, June 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City Hall located at 4455 W. 126th Street. The event will offer low cost rabies vaccinations, renewal of dog licenses, and low cost microchipping. These services are offered once a year by our animal control office here in the city. On to Mars, Batteries for Your Home and Fewer Car Accidents Every week I could give you an update on what they are up to over on Crenshaw Blvd. Elon’s two companies are changing our world, right here in Hawthorne. SpaceX plans to send its Dragon spacecraft to Mars as early as 2018, marking a major first step toward CEO Elon Musk’s goal of sending humans to the Red Planet. If successful, the endeavor would make SpaceX the first private spaceflight company to land a vehicle on another planet. Tesla announced that they are working on a battery pack for your home. Solar panels will draw the energy from the sun and feed the power into the battery wall that will power up your home. Finally, Tesla’s self driving car technology will prevent 50% of the auto accidents that are due to human error. The future is happening right here in front of us. You could say that we are becoming the good neighbors to the universe. If some of us are going to live on Mars we are going to have to get along with your neighbors. That would make Mars the Planet of Good Neighbors. Mars could be our “sister planet”. I’m sure we could roll out the red carpet to welcome any Martians to Hawthorne that would want to visit our fine city. The possibilities are unlimited. No, I am not having a cold one while writing this. No, I do not wish to send my dear wife to Mars. I do wonder what God will be thinking when we do set up camp up there. As long as we have an ice box, it will all be good. • Email me at: norbhuber@gmail.com Classifieds The deadline for Classified Ad submission and payment is Noon on Tuesday to appear in Thursday’s paper. Today, brands like Foster Grant have reading glass designs in a variety of shapes, colors, sizes and styles to flatter any facial structure and appeal to virtually every preference. • While readers help you focus on printed matter, they can actually make it difficult to see other things, such as a computer screen or the face of someone you’re talking to. In order to refocus your eyes from printed material to something else, you have to remove single-focus readers or peer over the lenses. A study by FGX International, the owner of the Foster Grant brand, found nearly half of people 40 and older who wear single-focus reading glasses take them off 10 or more times a day. Having to remove readers is irritating, embarrassing and hinders productivity, the majority of wearers said in the survey. The arrival of reading glasses with multiple strengths is changing the way people use readers. Foster Grant Multi-Focus reading glasses offer three different magnification zones in the lenses of a single pair of glasses. Users can keep the glasses on and still be able to focus comfortably on things farther away. It’s not necessary to remove the glasses in order to refocus from printed matter to something else, sparing users the time and aggravation of removing glasses and putting them back on. Since you remove the glasses less frequently, there’s less chance of misplacing them - so you no longer need to buy multiple pairs to leave around the house or keep replacing pairs you took off and lost. For most people, reading glasses are an inevitable part of growing older. But they don’t have to be an irritation, or something you’re embarrassed to wear. A little shopping around can help you find readers in a style, magnification and focus options that work best for your lifestyle. Visit www.fostergrant. com to find readers that are right for you. Here Are Key Facts to Know Before you Buy Reading Glasses (BPT) - Your 40th birthday was a while ago and since then, print looks like it’s been getting smaller. Moving printed matter farther from your eyes to bring it into focus worked for a while, but now you’re stretching your arm as far as it will reach. Since that arm’s not going to get any longer, it may be time to get some reading glasses. A visit to an eye doctor can confirm if you’re experiencing presbyopia, a natural side-effect of growing older. As you age, the lens inside our eye loses flexibility and becomes less effective at helping you focus. Most people will develop presbyopia in their early to mid- 40s; in fact, the number of people who wear corrective lenses spikes in the 40s, and 93 percent of people ages 65-75 wear corrective lenses, according to the Vis Of course knowing you’re far from alone in your need for reading glasses might not make you feel any better about wearing them. You may be tempted to sneak into the local pharmacy, grab the first pair of readers you see and hope you can pay for them and get out of there before anyone you know sees you. But don’t be hasty in your choice of reading glasses. A recent study by Foster Grant indicates the readers you wear can have a significant impact on your productivity and quality of life. Here are some important facts to help you choose reading glasses that are right for you: • Reading glasses generally offer magnification between +1.00 and +2.75, in increasing increments of .25. • You can buy readers without a prescription from a pharmacy, department store, vision center, discount store or online. • Try to purchase the lowest level of magnification that works for you; a magnification that is too strong may cause headaches and eye strain Visit us online: www.heraldpublications.com Police Reports Mon 5/2/16 to Sat 5/7/16 BURGLARY – COMMERCIAL 4900 W 147TH ST OTHER Mon 5/2/16 08:47 Crime Occurred: Mon 05/02/16 08:47 Property Taken: CDL, CASH, PASSPORT, house and vehicle car keys, CELL PHONE-310-508-3093, WORK ID, BLACK BANANA REPUBLIC BAG Method of Entry: LOCK PICKED BURGLARY 12300 S INGLEWOOD AV Mon 5/2/16 20:17 ATTEMPT RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY 11600 S MENLO AV HOUSE Mon 5/2/16 20:13 Property Taken: house key Method of Entry: OPENED BURGLARY – RESIDENTIAL 11100 S BURIN AV MOBILE HOME Mon 5/2/16 21:10 Property Taken: Playstation 4, 48” Samsung smart tv Method of Entry: UNLOCKED BURGLARY – RESIDENTIAL 11100 S BURIN AV HOUSE Mon 5/2/16 21:10 Property Taken: SONY TOUCH LABTOP, PASSPORT BELONGING TO Method of Entry: BODY FORCE POE: SLIDING WINDOW BURGLARY 4600 W 132ND ST Tue 5/3/16 16:37 BURGLARY – RESIDENTIAL 4300 W 142ND ST APARTMENT COMMON AREAS (LNDRY,CLB HSE,ETC) Tue 5/3/16 15:03 Property Taken: ROOFING TOOLS, TOOLS SETS ( S O C K E T S / W R E N C H E S / SCREWDRIVERS) Method of Entry: PRIED BURGLARY – RESIDENTIAL 4200 W IMPERIAL HY DUPLEX/FOURPLEX Wed 5/4/16 12:10 Method of Entry: UNKNOWN BURGLARY 4200 W EL SEGUNDO BL APARTMENT/CONDO Thu 5/5/16 06:33 Method of Entry: OPENED BURGLARY – RESIDENTIAL 4700 W 137TH PL HOUSE Thu 5/5/16 15:07 Property Taken: 1/2 carat diamond stud 14k gold, 14k herringbone w/ 1/2 carat diamond charm Method of Entry: SMASHED BURGLARY 14400 S INGLEWOOD AV Sat 5/7/16 17:56 Property Taken: BLACK ALPINE • To appear in next week’s paper, submit your Classifed Ad by Noon on Tuesday.
