May 12, 2016 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings News for the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ From City Clerk Norb Huber Community K-9 Dinner The Hawthorne President’s Council will once again sponsor a Community BBQ Dinner to raise funds for the Hawthorne Police Department’s K-9 Unit. The date is Thursday, May 26th starting at 5 p.m. at the Memorial Center. Adults are $5 and children are $2.50. It’s great to come together as a community and help support our HPD. In attendance each year are some of the German shepherd dogs that make up our K-9 unit. The dogs have been trained to help their partners at various crime scenes. They usually show off their talents for all in attendance. Historical Society Meeting The next open meeting of the Hawthorne Historical Society will be held on Monday, May 23 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Hawthorne Museum. By attending you will meet some of your neighbors, get to know what Hawthorne was like and become more involved with your community. We need you to be involved. Make a point to try to make our next meeting. Coffee and cookies are available for your nutrition. Good Neighbors Day Coming this Summer The 6th Annual Good Neighbors Day is planned for Saturday, July 16th at the civic center area. We want to make this year’s edition bigger and better. We are inviting any Hawthorne residents with talent or with some talent, to contact us about performing on that day. We are particularly looking to involve our young people in our program. If you know of a local band that is practicing in their garage and wants an opportunity to perform, this would be their chance. Please email me if you know of anyone who would like to participate. It’s time to head to the beach for some fun in the waves. Time to get the BBQ going to grill up some brats and have a cold one or two. Graduations, Father’s Day and the start of summer day camps are all right around the corner. Check with the Hawthorne Parks and Recreation Department for a list of swimming lessons that are taught at our city’s pool on Inglewood Avenue by Hawthorne High School. Comments, Comments and more Comments My readership must be picking up, I’ve been hearing more and more comments lately, both negative and positive, regarding some of my recent rumblings. “You’re getting too religious”, “You must be an old drunk”, “Isn’t there any separation of church and state?”, “Why do you refer to your dear wife as your old lady?” “You better watch it, they may fire you.” To tell you the truth, I’m thrilled, after writing over 300 columns and getting absolutely no response, I have a few people actually reading what I type especially since I started writing about, God, crime and cold ones. Now if I can get any one of you to understand what I’m trying to communicate then all of my long hard minutes pouring over the keyboard will have been all worth it. If I can motivate one soul to take a positive step in the right direction, then I will be able to sleep a little bit easier. I don’t write this column for any other reason than to have fun and maybe bring about a little positive “vibe” back to our city of decent neighbors. (I get tired of calling you all good neighbors.) Maybe that’s what I’m saying, I’m not perfect but I do CARE. I care about what goes on around me. I care enough to try to make a difference. In Galatians 6:9 we read, “Let us not grow weary of doing good.” Yes, I get tired of doing good. But, every day is another opportunity. By being transparent here in my column, I try to “tell it like it is”. I just like to be “real”. Why not be “real” with me? Because your cellphone or smartphone likely contains personal information about you that may include your name, home address, phone number and financial account information, a lost, stolen or hacked phone can be a treasure trove for criminals. Consumer Cellular, which specializes in no-contract cellphone service and phones primarily for people 50 and older, offers some advice for securing your cellphone: • Always use strong passwords.
