The facts that have been confirmed are that Michael received 13 gunshot wounds while Sandlin was shot seven times. The couple was initially described as being unresponsive in their Chevy Malibu at 3 a.m. However, there was never a weapon recovered at the scene nor has there been an official statement that the victims attacked police officers. An Internal Affairs investigation was supposed to result in a report earlier this year, but that has not been released to date. The Inglewood Police Department (IPD) was investigated by the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division in 2009 due to a series of officer-involved shootings in 2008. While no investigation has been launched against IPD as a result of the Michael/Sandlin shooting, residents like Wilson believe that the City of Inglewood should be transparent and provide answers to residents’ questions regarding the case. “It’s scary that the police have been under investigation before,” added Wilson. “I am literally speechless that they demonized me for being a participating citizen and for doing my civic duty. I am completely baffled at the demeanor and hostility that the mayor has for the community.” •
