Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May— commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco- Mexican War in 1861. It has become a much bigger holiday in America than in Mexico. All I know is that it’s another good day for us to have a “cold one” and chill out with your friends or neighbors. Every day is another holiday in the USA. May 4th is Star Wars Day, as in “may the fourth be with you”. This Saturday is Naked Gardening Day in America. This Sunday is Mother’s Day. To tell you the truth, I really don’t need a holiday in order to go to the ice box and grab a cold one. Oh yes, did I tell you that it was Teacher Appreciation Week this week? Teachers deserve more than just one day, we need seven days to feel the love. I usually receive a Starbucks gift card from a student, they know I like my coffee black. A great cup of coffee and a cold one are my two favorite drinks. So, here’s to all the great Mothers, naked gardeners, coffee drinking educators, storm troopers, and Mexican victories, ole’. National Day of Prayer The first Thursday in May has been designated as the National Day of Prayer in America. The Hawthorne/Lawndale Ministerial Association is hosting a prayer service on Thursday, May 5 at 7 p.m. at the Church of Nazarene which is located at 4500 El Segundo Blvd. There will be shared music, messages and prayers led by our local pastors and spiritual leaders. It’s also Ascension Day on the 5th in the Christian church, commemorating the bodily ascension of our Savior into heaven. 5K Run and Health Fair Rain or shine, the Hawthorne Educational Foundation and School District will host the Hawthorne Run/ Walk Challenge and Health Fair this year on the Hawthorne High School campus starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 7th. All Hawthorne students get to run for free. If you want to t-shirt then you should pre-register. Community K9 Dinner I know it is a few weeks away, but the Hawthorne President’s Council will once again sponsor a Community BBQ Dinner to raise funds for the Hawthorne Police Department’s K9 Unit. The date is Thursday, May 26th starting at 5 p.m. at the Memorial Center. City of Good Neighbors? Since I am your elected city clerk, I am privy to confidential information regarding our fine city. I am given updates on crime or disturbances that take place almost nightly where our police officers are almost always in the line of fire. They literally put their lives on the line to keep us safe every day and every night. I read the horrific stories of disturbances that get out of control. People do not respect our men and women in uniform and may even try to induce the officers into making a wrong move so they can sue the city. Hawthorne’s population is over 88k, and of those, 87,950 are good neighbors showing respect for others and for the law. The other 40 to 50 individuals who choose to break the rules, make the entire city’s image look bad. My dear wife, aka my ol’ lady, had her cell phone stolen while shopping locally last week. The perception is that some parts of our city are crime ridden, unsafe neighborhoods. We the citizens of Hawthorne have to take our neighborhoods back. We have to take more ownership of our community. Call the police if you are unsure of a situation. Organize a neighborhood watch meeting, or start a clean up day in your neighborhood. We all want to be proud to say “I live in Hawthorne”. • Email me at: norbhuber@gmail.com To appear in next week’s paper, submit your Classifed Ad by Noon on Tuesday. bed 3 bath $6,250.00/Month P l e a s e C a l l B i l l Ru a n e ’s office-310-647-1635 For Lease Prime Retail office Space 149 Standard 2,200 sq,ft. 2.50 NNN Bill Ruane-310-322-0000 Employment We are hiring caregivers who would love to help other seniors.
