Hawthorne Happenings News for the City of Good Neighbors from City Clerk Huber Cesar Chavez Day Cesar Chavez Day is this Friday, so don’t go to the DMV or any other State offices; they will be closed. Chavez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, later renamed the United Farm Workers. He died April 23, 1993, at age 66. He was born March 31, 1927. Chavez fought hard to get rights for farm workers. Now, the farmers cannot find enough people to work in the fields even by offering above average pay. Whatever happened to America’s youth going to work on a hard labor job? I worked as a logger in the forests of Washington State during the summers of my college years. I loved it. I learned that you had to work hard to earn a paycheck. I got dirty. I got muddy. I learned that if I showed up on time and worked hard, I would keep my job. At the end of my final summer, I had to decide whether to stay as a logger and cut down trees or come to Hawthorne, CA to help grow some kids by teaching at Trinity Lutheran School. I have often wondered how my life would be if I would of stayed up there. Hawthorne has been good to me. The Lord has been good to me. I am the luckiest or most blessed old City Clerk living in the City of Good Neighbors. April Fools Day This Saturday, April 1, you can do anything stupid and get out of it by simply saying “April Fools!” Be careful, some jokes go too far. A joke is a joke until it hurts someone. My cold one jokes are not meant to hurt anyone. I certainly know that there are people who are battling addictions. I do not wish those kinds of maladies on anyone. I like to have fun. I like to laugh at myself. God has made us all different. He loves us regardless of how stupid we are. He loves us the way we are. There is no April Fools when it comes to the promises God has given to us. Jesus died for the sins of the entire world, not just Christians. He has redeemed the world. God will bring you to salvation through loving you and you have nothing to do with it. Don’t reject it, and it’s yours. I’m telling you the truth, this is not an April Fools joke.
