It was first year head coach Steven Washington’s first win. Washington replaced Jeff Prihold, who stepped down after last season. A two-run double by Jesus Sanchez in the bottom of the fourth inning gave the Cardinals a 3-1 lead. The Comets came back with a run on a double by Damien Johnson to bring home his brother, Dejuan, but pitcher Leo Cervantes shut down Westchester the rest of the game for a complete-game win. Cervantes allowed two runs on five hits. Armando Novela drove in the other Lawndale run in the bottom of the second. Despite losing the season opening game, Novela gave up just two earned runs as six Cardinal errors led to 12 unearned runs. “It was a tough game,” Washington said. “It was our first game on the road and it was at night. It’s a great learning experience. These guys continue to work hard.” Washington has several key returning starters, behind first baseman-pitcher Tyler Bonsky. Last season, Bonsky was first team all-Ocean League and threw a shutout in Lawndale’s stunning 1-0 shutout over powerhouse El Segundo. Issac Galan, Jesus Sanchez, Mike Zambrano and Kobe Dempsey are other key returning players for the Cardinals.
