February 2, 2017 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings News for the City of Good Neighbors from City Clerk Huber Celebration of Life – Super Bowl Sunday – Anyone watching the game? Do we love the food more than the game? Do we watch the commercials more than the game itself? Do we care more about winning our bet than the final score? Will the half time show be more entertaining than the first half? New England vs Atlanta, how boring! How about a cross South Bay matchup with the Rams vs the Chargers? That would be the Blue Line match up, Carson vs Inglewood. The two teams will share a stadium in 2019 and the Super Bowl will be played there a couple of years later. A LA home team victory would be pretty exciting. Tennis Anyone? Beginning adult tennis lessons start this Saturday, February 4th at 7 a.m. at the Holly Park tennis courts. If you have always wanted to learn how to play the great game of tennis, here is your chance. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Aguilar at lisagaguilar@gmail.com. Golf Anyone? Two tournaments coming up. Please contact me if you would like to play in either one or both: The Lutheran Open on Monday, February 20th at 8 a.m. at Coyote Hills Golf Club in Fullerton. The Hawthorne Parks Foundation Gold Tournament is on Monday, April 10th at 12 noon at Coyote Hills Golf Club. These are two good days to get out of the office and enjoy some sunshine following our rainy season. Pancakes Anyone? The 2017 Historical Society Pancake Breakfast will be held Saturday, February 25th at the VFW Post located at 4562 W. 131st Street from 7 a.m. – 11 a.m. Everything tastes better outside and this year’s breakfast will be held outside the historic water tank building of the VFW. The public is invited. Every year these young people learn a great deal from this public speaking event. Half Empty or Half Full? I was accused of being too negative last week with my rants about the lack of parking in Hawthorne and the rainstorm flooding many of our garages. So, let me take a more positive approach this week. I’m thankful to So Cal Edison for turning my power off for a day to “upgrade the grid” on my block. I’m thankful that I can hang up on all of those phone solicitors who want to give me a free estimate on remodeling my house. (I tell them I’m all done, but in actuality we are putting in new landscaping and working on our abode 37 years after we bought our place. Home remodeling never ends.) I’m thankful that I’ve got half of my taxes figured out already. You see, you can look at your world with a half empty attitude or a half full attitude. It all depends on your attitude. When my old lady gives me a directive, I can say, “thank you honey” or I can mutter something under my breath about “why me?” Thank God for these little irritations in life. Without pain, suffering, anguish, frustration, anger and outrage, there would be no joy, happiness, and sense of accomplishment. There would be no need to celebrate with a cold one. All I know is that when my mug is empty, it’s time for another one. May your life be full and overflowing, spilling all over your world with refreshing joy. Don’t forget to clean up the mess you made. • Contact email: norbhuber@gmail.com (If you do enjoy my weekly column, please shoot me an email. I love to hear from my readers.) Hosted by the South Bay Caltrans Project May Cause Delays Near LAX Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) advises guests and employees that they may experience traffic delays for the next few weeks near the airport as Caltrans continues nighttime work to seal bridge surfaces on Interstate 105. Interstate 105 lanes and ramps in the LAX area may be closed nightly Sunday through Thursday as a Caltrans contractor applies a sealant to the surfaces of bridges (bridge decks). The work began in mid-January, but was temporarily suspended. Current plans call for lanes and ramps to begin closing as early as 7 p.m., with several lanes of Interstate 105 closed after 10 p.m. and reopening by 5 a.m. Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB), the discussion will cover workforce development, project labor agreements, insurance regulations and general construction. Registration is at 10:30 a.m., with a general session from 11- 11:45, a lunch presentation from noon to 1:15, and networking from 1:15 to 2.
