In February of last year the city council approved an agreement with the Board of State and Community Corrections [BSCC] for conditional grant funds from the California Gang Reduction, Intervention and Prevention [CalGRIP] Program not to exceed $1.5 million. “The CalGRIP Grant Program is subject to annual allocations through the State budget process,” states the staff report signed by Parks, Recreation, and Library Services Director Sabrina Barnes. “Funding for the second and third years of the grant is dependent on the City’s compliance with the grant award agreement and availability of funds.” The City completed and submitted the reapplication process on Dec. 3, 2015 in order to receive grant funds for year two, which extends funding until the Dec. 31, 2016 in the maximum amount of $500,000. As children returned to three Lawndale Elementary School District campuses this week after winter break, Providence equipped some 300 fifth-graders at three campuses with Sqord’s kid-proof wrist gear that provides an activity tracker, online games and a kid-safe social media app designed to encourage kids to spend more time in active, physical play.
