Santa brought that joy to the kids of Hawthorne last Saturday evening. His arrival was a bit delayed due to the fact that he needed a police escort to provide him safe passage on the streets of Hawthorne. I guess that made the kids that much happier when he did show up riding in an old, vintage fire truck. Most of the kids were laughing, smiling or yelling at the jolly fella as he walked towards the stage to take his place on his throne where over 150 youngsters got to sit on his lap. (My two grandkids were just the opposite, they were both afraid of the big guy and cried for mommy when I tried to take them up on stage. It’s okay, they will get every present they want from their two grandmas. They don’t need to tell Santa what they want.) Holiday Home Decorating Contest It’s that time of the year, it’s time to decorate our homes for the holidays. The Hawthorne Parks and Fine Arts Commission once again is offering some nice prizes to the winners of the Holiday Home Decoration Contest. Applications are available at the Parks office at the Memorial Center. The entry deadline is December 16th with judging on the 18th. Memories of the Summer of 2013 The recent protests of recent police actions across the country reminded me of the month long protests that took place right here in Hawthorne during the summer of 2013. The protests were non-violent but resulted in shutting down the city’s website and much of the city’s email communications. The Hawthorne protest was over the shooting of a dog by an officer and the YouTube video that went viral on the internet. Many of the viewers only saw a portion of the incident and did not get the full picture of what happened. We received over 500,000 “e-signatures” from protestors around the world, who clicked a button on their computer to add their names to the list of people who thought the shooting was not necessary and was outright cruel to the animal and its owner. The bottom line remains: Being a police officer is a very dangerous, difficult job. These brave men and women are there to protect us and must make split second decisions that may save their lives and the lives of others. Rain We are spoiled and we forget it some times. Our sunny, mild weather spoils us into believing that this is the way it should be all the time. When we finally received a couple of days of rain last week we got restless. My wife, a native of Los Angeles, was tired of the rain after the first day. Our entire lifestyle is upset because we do so much outside. We are not used to staying inside our homes. There are many places in America where people have to stay inside for most of the winter months. Another rain storm is predicted for this Friday. Go to the library and get a good book. Enjoy a quiet evening. Maybe have a “warm” drink for a change, instead of a “cold one”. Hawthorne Mall The big announcement was made last week. The owner of the Hawthorne mall has agreed on a design plan to convert the shuttered buildings into an upscale outlet mall complex with higher end stores. If the plan goes through without any set backs, the conversion will take two to three years to complete. At least it is a start. Now, let’s make it happen. The people of Hawthorne have been waiting close to 20 years to see something happen. I guess we can wait another two or three. Thanks for Reading I guess there ARE people who read this column. It seems like every time I miss a week and don’t find the time to write anything, I have several people ask me if I’m okay. Yes, I’m doing fine, it’s difficult to find the one hour once a week it takes to put my fingers to the keyboard. Thanks for reading my blurbs. I do my best to tell it like it is, shoot from the heart, or entertain with some weak humor. Just to set the record straight, I love my wife, even if I pick on her some times. Also, I’m not a drunk that has a “cold one” every night. Have a great Christmas season. There is much to be joyful about. Upcoming Event • Tuesday, December 16: Special Meeting of the Hawthorne City Council – 6 p.m.• Briefs Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce Christmas Mixer Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce will be holding a December mixer on the 18th from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at the Chamber of Commerce, 12519 Crenshaw Blvd. In lieu of an entrance fee, please bring an unwrapped toy valued at $10 or more, to help children in need. • Visit us online: www.heraldpublications.com
