November 24, 2016 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings News for the City of Good Neighbors from City Clerk Huber Seniors Christmas Luncheon The annual Seniors Christmas Luncheon will be held on Friday, December 2 at noon at the Memorial Center. All seniors are invited to enjoy a great lunch and a lot of good social time during this special time of the year. Best Burger in Hawthorne Last week I wrote about a few of the eating hangouts on Inglewood Avenue. Since some of my ten readers enjoyed it, I thought I would continue my tales of tummy tidbits. Me and my buddy were helping a friend move out of his apartment over in Moneta Gardens last Saturday and after climbing two flights of stairs carrying 70 boxes all morning long we decided to try out B & R Burgers on Rosecrans, just east of Yukon. We both ordered the King Burger with everything on it. It was only $4.99. Wow! It definitely was worth the ten minute wait while they cooked it to perfection. I would rate it as one of the best burgers in the city. R & B is a mom and pop operation. Sorry to report that they do not serve cold ones to wash the delicious delights down with. They were busy and seemed to have no problem competing with McDonald’s right across the avenue. There is something to be said about patronizing a small business when the choice is real, tasty food or fast food handed to you in a bag as you at the drive thru window. Small Business Saturday is November 26th, this coming Saturday. Make a point to find a hometown business that is delivering a product or service that is most of the time better than the big box stores or crowded malls. Prayers for Officer As most of you know, one of our Hawthorne Police Officers was shot in the leg last Saturday late afternoon after a confrontation with a suspect in the Public Storage facility on Rosecrans. As soon as the call went out, “officer down” there was an immediate response by surrounding enforcement agencies. Rosecrans was closed for most of the evening. Helicopters were above shooting news video. But the most important news was that the officer had non-life threatening injuries. This incident could have been much worse. I can’t imagine what each of our officers think and feel when one of their own is shot. Every call that they response to brings a new situation for them to deal with. They never know what the individuals are going to do. Our prayers go out to the officer, his family and all of our men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect us. Turkey Day, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Whole Lot of Shopping Well at least a few of the large department stores have said they will honor Thanksgiving and not open Black Friday on Thursday. Have you ever gotten up at 4 in the morning to go stand in line to run into a store to get a sale bargain only to find out that they had only ten of the special items to sell? My old lady always wants me to get the 99 cent Poinsettias at Home Depot. With no limit on how many you can buy, I usually end up filling my pickup truck bed with poinsettias. She gives them away as gifts and decorates our home with the colorful red flower. Ecommerce is BIG all weekend long. Cyber Monday started several years ago. This year we have four weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas which gives us a few etra days to shop. My nativity business has grown once again this past year. We now are producing our product year around with over 80% of the sales coming the last six weeks of the calendar year. The Bible Belt southern states is where a majority of our orders are sent to. Texas and Florida always rank high on the list of most sales. People like to set up a nativity in front of their home to let others know the “real reason for the season”. The name of our company is Outdoor Nativity Store. Check us out online by going to outdoornativitystore.com. I’ll make you a sweetheart of a deal if you are interested in displaying a nativity at your abode. Christmas season can be hectic and somewhat stressful for a lot of folk. Jesus came to give us peace. Even during the busiest of seasons, we can relax and have peace knowing that God is in control.
