Her gullibility puts her in question as to her ability to make sound decisions. The only light in this dark tunnel is Mr. Shadbehr who has the knowledge, intelligence, experience and integrity to provide an accurate picture of what our budget truly is. He has to clean up this mess and make some painful decisions that will further impact the already damaged quality of life for the residents of Hawthorne. The horrible lack of leadership and downright fraud should cost jobs. The first people to go should be all those who were “added” last year when we did not and still do not have the money to fund their positions. This includes the mayor’s campaign manager, Mr. Garfinkle, who is now our Public Information Officer, his staff and others. Mr. Brown and Mr. Manbahal should have the dignity to resign now before any more damage is done. Their actions are the ultimate insult to the good, hardworking residents of Hawthorne who once again have to live through another crisis of deceitful and power abusing officials. Finance Director, Ricky Manbahal out and out lied and deceived the city by inventing revenue, or as acting City Manager , Arne Shadbehr called it , “imaginary money,” in presenting the budget to the city leaders and residents. This imaginary money was in the form of eliminating the city attorney’s office, money from the yet to be re- opened mall and other phony resources. This farce, perpetrated by former City Manager , Mike Goodson, along with Mr. Manbahal, conspired to pull almost six million dollars from city reserve funds and not let the city council know where the money came from since obviously the imaginary money does not exist. For months now the financial reports have had glaring red flags in the area of disappearing reserves. The only people who seemed to notice and take this seriously were Councilpersons Vargas and Michelin. Mayor Brown kept the charade going and still is trying to pretend and lie to the residents about it. Following right along with him is Councilwoman Angie English. Ms. English loves to criticize her colleagues by calling them shameful and disrespectful. Well, those words are now directed at her and Mayor Brown. As far as Ms. Valentine goes, it is hard to say. She has supported painting this fraud until last Thursday’s special meeting. Her stories about Paul, John, George and Ringo are so engaging and funny; she does a great job of humanizing these icons and proving that they really were just “average” boys. The archival footage paired with original recordings and songs from the group is always an exciting treat, as any Beatles fan would agree. Some of the documentary’s best moments come from Freda’s days at the Beatles Headquarters as she recalls outlandish requests from fans. A fan once sent her a stick of gum for one of the boys to chew on and send it back, which she did. From cutting pieces of material from their clothes to collecting their hair after a haircut, Freda did everything she could to satisfy the frenzy of Beatles fans. “Genuine” is the best word to describe both Freda and this film because, up until now, Freda has kept this past life a sort of mystery to her friends and even family. She didn’t want her past to overshadow who she is today, which is why she kept all of her Beatles memorabilia (worth over thousands of dollars) neatly tucked away in her attic. The only reason why she even agreed to make the film, she explains, is to show her grandson one day so he knows what a full life she had “before the memory box goes completely.” If you’re a fan of The Beatles, then Good Ol’ Freda is a must see; it’s a fantastic story, equally heartfelt and quirky. It highlights the evolution of the group through the eyes of the one who was there through it all; the challenges, the tours, the iconic breakthroughs and the momentum of success from the greatest band in history.
