Hawthorne Happenings News for the City of Good Neighbors from City Clerk Huber Small World or Maybe People Actually Read This StufF What started out as a small project of tearing out my front lawn and putting in new grass turned into a six month “ordeal” of dealing with mud and dirt from ripping out both our lawn and driveway. We had our cement guys pour the driveway in January, but last Saturday, I finally got my grandkids and son-in-law to help me roll out the sod. I was down on my knees for a few hours and I could tell my left knee was not used to bending like that. After a few hours of extreme pain, I asked my daughter to drive me to the emergency room at one of those fine hospitals in Torrance. I went to the Catholic one that doesn’t allow for any birth control procedures to be performed. Since it was my leg that was hurting, I guess it really didn’t matter. Four and a half hours later the ER doctor told me to take these pain pills and rest it. While waiting in the waiting room, one of my loyal readers came over and told me to have a cold one. He went on for a good 30 minutes of telling me how he enjoys reading my weekly prescription for curing all of life’s ills. The next day, I went to Wal-Mart on Inglewood Avenue looking for cough medicine and another one of my readers comes up and tells me to have a cold one. Is this my legacy? Will I be remembered for cold ones? Will I be buried with cold ones surrounding me? Does anyone remember anything else I say? Like any good politician, it’s not so much the content of your message but whether people like what you say. There seems to be a few people who like what I say. At least I admit that I’m full of it. Full of it? Full of what? No, not a cold one. Happy America fell to 14th on the list of happiest countries in the world. Norway is number one because people are socially connected and feel accepted by others. What makes you happy? I’m happiest when surrounded by and connected to the family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and students that God has put into my life. My nephew, who is 30 years my junior, told me recently that the only thing we can control in our lives is “how we see life”. I thought it was pretty insightful for a young man to see that we can choose to be happy or mad. Why not be happy?
