The Inglewood City Council recognized
Mrs. Lorene Shaw at its meeting Tuesday
with a posthumous commendation for her
years of service to the city. The long-time
resident and volunteer steered the planning
committee that hosts the annual celebration
of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Mayor James T. Butts lauded Shaw for
overseeing the celebration and speech
contest for the past 20 years. “She left a
great legacy,” he said, before introducing the
daughter and granddaughter of Mrs. Shaw.
“My mom was very, very dedicated to
the city as well as the committee,” said her
daughter. “I look forward to working on the
2019 MLK committee.”
Also on Tuesday the Council approved
consent calendar items unanimously,
including a resolution to extend the deadline
to initiate development of affordable
housing for a period not to exceed five
years. The group also approved renovation
and repairs to the parking garage at South
Locust Street. The combined cost, upwards
of $27,000, will come from redevelopment
agency funds. Butts preemptively noted
that redevelopment funds are earmarked
for specific purposes and cannot be used
for general fund expenditures.
A hearing to consider an appeal filed by
Bestway Recycling was tabled until the
meeting of Feb. 27. The vendor filed an
appeal to having its operating license revoked.
Councilmember George Dotson announced
the annual shredding event this weekend.
On Saturday, residents may bring up to
three boxes of documents to 2901 West
Manchester, at the Police Community Center.
Councilmember Alex Padilla encouraged
people to bring their secure documents
without trepidation. “You get to watch your
things be shredded,” he said. Participants
should arrive by 11:45 a.m.
Padilla also thanked the economic
development and police departments for their
work in resolving an abandoned building
that gathered transients and illegal activity.
“The building was demolished,” Padilla
said, adding that police made a herculean
effort to scan the building for any signs of
occupants before moving forward with the
demo. “It was a smooth process.”
Councilmember Ralph Franklin announced
the town hall meeting hosted in his district
last month will be viewable on the City of
Inglewood’s public broadcast later this week.
Franklin noted the final apparatuses will be
installed at Center Park at 111th Street and
Yukon, and the park will re-open this month.
In public comments, Sam Pena, the new
executive vice-president of the Inglewood/
LAX Chamber of Commerce, announced
new headquarters at 333 Queen St. Pena
thanked his predecessor and invited the
community to visit the chamber. “We are
open for business,” he said.
Willie Agee reported on the recent play at
the Agee Playhouse, saying it was a packed
house. He invited the mayor and council
to the next performance on February 17.
Butts announced he has been invited to
be the keynote speaker at West Hollywood’s
Community Leader Networking Breakfast.
Butts said this and other such invites are
“a tribute to the city’s growth and social
intelligentsia…We are recognized as a body
that knows how to cultivate an economy
and create jobs.”
During last week’s meeting, action went
forward to acquire parcels along Century
Boulevard through the process of eminent
domain. A staff report by Bruce Goodly
indicated the 15 parcels of land, listed in
agenda item CS.1 and PH-1, would be
acquired through eminent domain for the
Century Boulevard Roadway Improvements
Project. Just compensation offers have been
made to each of the 15 owners of record,
according to Goodly.
A closed session on the action was held
prior to the meeting. During the public
hearing on the matter, one person spoke.
Stacy Thomsen, representing the Moezzi
Family Trust, submitted a letter of rejection.
Thomsen said the family believes the offer
is inadequate. The vote was unanimous to
adopt the resolution of necessity.
The Inglewood City Council meets every
Tuesday, unless otherwise noted, at 2 p.m.
in the council chambers on the ninth floor,
Inglewood City Hall. •
