Back To School Resources:
Covid-19 Edition
Hawthorne Hotspot
By Samantha Schmidt
Hi Hawthorne neighbors! By this
time, I am pretty confident that most LA
County students are now attending school.
However, this school year is different than
other years, and I know some students
may not have access to as many resources
as others. Whether open for in-person
teaching or helping students through
the process of remote learning, we must
provide our kids with holistic support.
Thus, here are some resources that I
know can be extremely beneficial and useful
to students!
Back To School Free Resources:
Free Wi-Fi!
The first resource I’d like for you to
be aware of is free Wi-Fi! In case you
were not aware, Los Angeles is providing
hotspots for free! The website is called
LA County Hotspot Locater, where all
you do is input any address and the website
will locate free hotspots for you! Currently,
Hawthorne Library is offering free
hotspots as of now to students! If you
know someone or yourself does not have
the best internet connection for your
kids, then go to http://findwifi.lacounty.gov/.
I believe this can be exceedingly helpful
to low-income families who do not have
access to the internet or can roughly afford
it. Thus, spread the word to close friends
and family!
Free Mobile Hotspot,
Printing, & Laptop Kits!
The second resource I would like you also
to be aware of is a free mobile hotspot, which
also includes free printing and laptop kits!
Los Angeles County Libraries are taking the
initiative and providing these resources to
your kids! Students can now print up to 10
documents at their wireless printing services
and can pick them up with no contact using
their Sidewalk Service.
Hawthorne Library is one of the locations
listed on the website! In addition,
any printed documents will be placed in
an envelope for confidentiality. If you want
more information about this process, please
go to https://lacountylibrary.org/print/ for
instructions. As for the laptop and hotspot
loans, the library has ten library locations
that are offering Chromebooks (includes a
charger and a carrying case), as well as a
free Wi-Fi hotspot! The only thing you will
need is a valid library card and you will be
eligible! For more information about the 10
locations and specific details, go to https://
lacountylibrary.org/express-service/ to reserve
your kits!
Free Meals!
The third resource I can tell you about is
free meals for students. For our Hawthorne
residents, the USDA has authorized Hawthorne
Schools District to participate in the “Grab
n Go Meal Bags” until December 2020! The
meals will be available all week, Monday-
Thursdays from 9:30 am-12:30 pm and
each kid can take up to two meals a day.
Please see the link to see what schools are
offering meals: https://www.hawthorne.k12.
ca.us/grabandgo. Another resource made
available by a local group is the Hawthorne
Community Fridge! This is a project made
by the people for the people. Hawthorne
Community Fridge was created by the
Los Angeles Community Fridge, a nonprofit
organization where they help provide
food to those in need! It is available to
everyone for free! Also, you will find other
necessities such as baby food and formula.
You can even donate food to help a family
out. The Community Fridge is located next
to Continental Gourmet at 12921 Prairie
Avenue if you would like to donate or grab
yourself a snack.
More Recommendations
Other recommendations I advise that you
follow is your city’s social media for updates
and news! Sometimes they will post resources
that can be helpful to anyone! Hawthorne’s
Instagram account, @cityofhawthorneca,
posted additional Covid-19 resources under
their profile’s bio. These resources include
how to apply for unemployment, resources
for restaurant and entertainment employees,
and even free mental health services to your
kids, all in Spanish and English! If you are in
need of these resources, be sure to download
the Instagram app on your mobile device
via Apple Store or Google Play and (once
downloaded) search up @cityofhawthorneca
within the Instagram app to find our city’s
page. We also provide these and other resources
on our twitter (@hawthorneCAL) as well as
our Nextdoor page at www.nextdoor.com.
My Thoughts
I believe that at this time that we are
experiencing and living through, we must
all help each other out as much as we can.
No one ever knows if their friend or family
member cannot afford Wi-Fi or do not have
