A team of Hawthorne School District administrators decided to work together and nominate Dr. Markarian for Region 14, which covers 18 other school districts. After the regional award winners are named, a state committee selects a state winner. Nominees are kept in the dark about the process during the regional nominations. “I was surprised to win the region award but I was even more surprised to win the state award,” Dr. Markarian said. “It was really an incredible honor.” While Dr. Markarian was kept in the dark about the nomination process, both he and his colleagues were surprised when ACSA named him the regional and state winner. “Brian found out he won the state award before the district because he was at the ACSA meeting, but the district knew about his winning the Region 14 Award before he did,” Hawthorne Superintendent Dr. Helen Dr. Markarian’s work and commitment to education has not only been felt at the Hawthorne School District but has left an impression on ACSA which describes him as a “standard-bearer for ACSA Student and Associate Charters, becoming an aspiring leader group coordinator in Region 14.” Despite the academic success achieved by the Hawthorne School District’s students, Dr. Markarian is proud of his colleagues commitment to continue providing the best education for the students that they serve. “We are always progressing and always learning and ultimately that is what you want from your kids,” Dr. Markarian said. “One of the things that we have embraced as professionals is that we know that the expectation of learning applies to us as well, so we constantly try to improve what we are doing in the classroom with our kids.” In addition to providing a top-quality education, the district is committed to making the education and all resources necessary to provide it, accessible to every child in the district. “It is also about equal access for everyone and providing the support to ensure that the access exist,” Dr. Markarian said. “It is a great time to be in education because the feeling is that everyone of our kids should have access to the richest education possible and to the same set of standards and expectations.” While the award does speak volumes to the work and impact that Dr. Markarian has accomplished in his position with the Hawthorne School District, he is quick to acknowledge the quality of work done by his colleagues on a daily basis. “Any type of award like this is just so humbling, that if anything it is truly a reinforcement of how strong the team is around me, not only within Hawthorne but the collaboration that we have with neighboring districts and throughout the South Bay,” Dr. Markarian said. “If anything, I think it is a testament as to how great the work is around this area and the ability to collaborate with so many incredible people inside and outside the classroom.” The award sits on a high shelf in his office and is a small reminder of the appreciation and recognition that not only the state has for him, but it’s a token of appreciation from the colleagues that work at his side on a daily basis. “It was an incredible honor at any level and it was a great surprise,” Dr. Markarian said. •
