Page 2 December 10, 2015 Hawthorne Happenings News for the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ From City Clerk Norb Huber NEW Mayor and Council members Sworn In Alex Vargas was sworn in as the new Mayor of Hawthorne this past Tuesday evening. He has served as a councilmen for the past six years. He took over the middle seat on the council after being officially being sworn in by City Clerk Huber and ceremonially sworn in by his father and mother in front of an overflow crowd in the council chambers. Along with Mayor Vargas, Nilo Michelin and Haidar Awad were sworn in as council members. Mr. Michelin is returning for his second term and Mr. Awad is one of the youngest council members ever elected. They won their seats during the November 3 election beating out five other council candidates. Now, with the results official, there is one vacancy on the council. An application process was discussed regarding the appointment of a Hawthorne resident to fill the vacated seat left behind by Mayor Vargas. The appointee will serve for the remainder of his term, two years. With the change of leadership, Hawthorne has a clean slate to work with. There was plenty to be optimistic about after the meeting. Many of the residents commented about the new spirit of cooperation that appeared up in front. We shall see if the four members plus their appointee can move our city forward. Lets all try to work together to make this happen. Welcome Back Readers I missed you all the last three weeks. With the holidays, the rush to get things done, I have missed writing to you the past month. I know that some of you have missed seeing me as you pick up the newspaper. Maybe I had one too many things to do, maybe I had one too many cold ones, whatever the reason, I’m back and will try to share a few thoughts throughout the remainder of the calendar year and into 2016. I tend to try to do too many things in the course of one day. Besides teaching my high school Math classes and trying to be City Clerk, my small business has grown into a larger operation. There seems to be a lot of people who wish to purchase an outdoor nativity. With Christmas Day approaching, our sales may taper off soon. It’s a challenge to keep our products flowing to fill our orders. The internet has made it possible to sell to the world. New Hanger at Hawthorne Airport The December Mixer for the Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce was held at the new 42,000 square foot hanger at the Hawthorne Airport. Pat Carey, a Hawthorne Planning Commissioner and owner of the flight school over at the airport was instrumental in getting the largest hanger ever build to become a reality. Along with the growth of SpaceX, the east side of Hawthorne is booming with progress. The parking structure for SpaceX is getting closer to being completed. Take a drive over to Crenshaw and 120th Street to see all of the growth. Unity Walk As a result of the recent shootings in our SoCal area, there will be a Unity Walk held this Saturday, December 12th. It is meant to bring our community together to show our common respect for each other regardless of our religious affiliation. The walk will begin in front of St. Joseph Catholic Church at 10:45 a.m. and will conclude with a gathering at the Islamic Center around 11 a.m. Hawthorne is a diverse community that has shown a great deal of understanding and acceptance for all who live here. We pray for healing and unity. Santa Comes to Town The jolly ol’ fella showed up right on time last Saturday evening over at the old police station on 126th Street in Hawthorne. There was a fairly large group of little ones waiting to get their chance to sit on his lap and tell him what they wanted for Christmas. The Hawthorne Historical Society hosted the annual tree lighting and Santa arrival event. I guess Santa went back to the North Pole to start preparing for his big night. • Police Reports Mon 11/23/15 to Sat 11/28/15 ROBBERY 4000 W EL SEGUNDO BL STREET, HIGHWAY, ALLEY Tue 11/24/15 18:22 Property Taken: Black Dickies Jacket, $90 In US Currency, $5 In Change, 3 “Obama” Cell Phones ATTEMPT ROBBERY 11400 S HAWTHORNE BL SERVICE STATION, GAS VENDOR Wed 11/25/15 06:10 ATTEMPT ROBBERY 13100 S HAWTHORNE BL OTHER Wed 11/25/15 15:00 BURGLARY 11900 S OXFORD AV Mon 11/23 08:26 BURGLARY – COMMERCIAL 3800 W ROSECRANS AV OTHER Mon 11/23/15 08:00 Property Taken: U.S. CURRENCY BURGLARY – COMMERCIAL 12700 S HAWTHORNE BL Tue 11/24/15 09:40 Property Taken: APPLE IPHONE 6S, APPLE IPHONE 6S PLUS BURGLARY – RESIDENTIAL 4000 W 138TH ST APARTMENT/CONDO Mon 11/23/15 21:00 Property Taken: Apple Macbook Silver, Apple Air Pad BURGLARY – RESIDENTIAL 12500 S FREEMAN AV STORAGE SHED Wed 11/25/15 20:45 Property Taken: Burgandy Mountain Bike, Blue Mountain Bike BURGLARY – COMMERCIAL 13800 S PRAIRIE AV OTHER Thu 11/26/15 15:19 Property Taken: Apple Macbooks, Surface 3 Pro, Customer Computers, Miscellaneouss Computers BURGLARY – RESIDENTIAL 13000 S WASHINGTON AV HOUSE Sat 11/28/15 18:48 Property Taken: (8) gold bracelets • Follow Us on Twitter @heraldpub Film Review The Letters is a warm, albeit underwhelming, biopic about the work of Mother Teresa By Morgan Rojas for Cinemacy Photo by Juliet Stevenson in The Letters. Courtesy of Freestyle Releasing. Mother Teresa’s 50-year epic journey from a cloistered nun to a renowned and iconic humanitarian is brought to the big screen in the drama The Letters. Director William Riead assembles a powerful cast to bring the letters Mother Teresa wrote to her spiritual advisor, Father Celest van Exem, to life. Her story is truly a fascinating one but, unfortunately, the film can’t quite match the totality of the narrative, lacking enough passion and vigor to keep our interest for the duration of its 114-minute runtime. In the beginning, Sister Teresa was just another one of the many cloistered nuns living in the impoverished city of Calcutta, India’s capital. One unsuspecting afternoon, she believes to have heard the voice of God call her to leave her current teaching position within her convent and serve the poorest of the poor in the slums. This “call within a call”, she writes in one letter, was the beginning of her true life’s passion- becoming a voice for those in dire need of help and love. In 1950, she was given the title of “Mother” after her self-started congregation- Missionaries of Charity- was recognized by the pope and the church. In a similar narrative style to The Notebook, Father Celest van Exem acts as a narrator using Mother Teresa’s letters as the script. The story jumps from past to present day, as the priests push her canonization into sainthood after her death in 1997. As far as performances go, Juliet Stevenson transforms into Mother Teresa, adopting her frail mannerisms and gentle soul. She exudes confidence and heroism as the driving force behind the story. The biggest critique comes from the film’s pacing. The beginning was so rushed that, in a state of confusion, I actually had to rewind and watch the first few minutes a second time to get a better understanding of the story. The second act- where Mother Teresa overcomes a hasty unwelcoming from the Hindus within the slums who distrusted her presence in their community because of her Catholic beliefs, to finally gaining their acceptance- takes it’s time to build and develop. This is the crux of the story, so the attention paid here is expected, but then the third act again rushes by too quickly. In the last few minutes of the film, Mother Teresa has accepted a Nobel Peace Prize, becomes a globally recognized and worshiped name, and has enlightened the world on her “call within a call”. Were it not for the inconsistent pacing, The Letters had the potential to be a powerful, emotional, and laudable film definitely worthy of attention come awards season. Instead, what it the viewer will find is a fair, melodramatic biopic of the truly great work Mother Teresa accomplished.• Classifieds The deadline for Classified Ad submission and payment is Noon on Tuesday to appear in Thursday’s paper.
