Page 2 November 27, 2014 Wiseburn Unified School District Receives $52.7 Million from State By Nancy Peters At the recent meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Wiseburn Unified School District, Superintendent Dr. Tom Johnstone announced that on Tuesday, November 25, several trustees from Wiseburn and the DaVinci Boards at the State Allocation Board meeting at which the awarding of funds will be confirmed for the Charter School Facilities Program (CSFP). The Wiseburn Unified School District is the recipient of a state apportionment of funds in the amount of $52.7 million awarded by the CFSP. DaVinci Science Charter High School and DaVinci Design Charter High School, applied for the funding in April 2014. More than 70 applications were filed from across the state for the Preliminary Charter School Apportionments (PCSA). After 11 applications were deemed unqualified, the remaining applications were evaluated and a total of $89.9 million was allocated for the program and five programs received monies in Oakland, Santa Ana, and Sacramento. DaVinci Design will receive $52,764,386. The application by DaVinci Science was for $15,887,054 and although not awarded at this time, the money will be retained in the DaVinci Science “account” as eligible dollars to be allocated in the future. Applicants qualified to be considered for the PCSA funding had to meet specific criteria and preference points were awarded in order for the funds to be allocated. The district has four years to use the funds and convert the project to a final apportionment status, pending all required state approvals for rebuilding, refurbishing, and/or rehabilitating any district-owned facilities, i.e., not necessarily the charter school buildings or the actual charter school programs, but any approved project in the district. DaVinci Communications Charter High School and the DaVinci Innovation Academy Schools did not apply for funding through the CSFP. Other business at the meeting, at which Board Member JoAnne Kaneda was not present, included approval of action items: to ratify an agreement with P.S. ARTS as the Arts Program Coordinator for the district; a contract extension with the Dahlman Institute for Project Optimal on behalf of the Southwest SELPA; and the tentative agreement with the California School Employees Association (CSEA) for the 2014-15 fiscal year. The settlement agreement for funding for a special education due process case received a vote of 3-1, with Kaneda absent and Dennis Curtis, Board member casting the dissenting vote. The Wiseburn High School Sports Complex project required a supplemental Environmental Impact Report and the associated mitigation and monitoring program was approved. The Director of Facilities Planning reported that the State Department of Education (DOE) made final comments on the architect’s plans and specifications for the renovation of the buildings and complex that will become the Wiseburn High School. There are a few minor corrections that need to be made that are clerical in nature. It is expected that in January 2015 the plans will receive full approval from the DOE and construction projects will proceed. The Dana Middle School TIIP Program, made possible by a grant from UCLA, presented a synopsis of the work being accomplished by the participating teachers and the students using Google Education Programs and incorporating technology in many classes, including science, math, history, and English. Students are earning “belts” as they progress up the curriculum and can become “masters” in the programs. The use of tablets, MacBooks, and other sophisticated equipment, made possible through the grants and the purchases by the Wiseburn Unified School District Board of Trustees, allow more than 350 students to work with technology only, as the district is on the road to a paperless system. Participation by the students in the Google Education Program is causing students to have a new enthusiasm for learning as they compete to earn the belts and badges in each subject. The TIPP program is being used in several classrooms in the middle school and will also allow teachers to attend conventions and seminars to share the Google Education Program with other districts.
