A survey of people who have lived through disasters like hurricanes and tornados has shown that people put more trust in their neighbors helping them than any government agency. Emergency response teams are limited on how many people they can help in a disaster. Neighbors who are faced with the possibility of loss of life or property band together and forget all of their previous animosities and help one another survive. We all know that we have to be ready for the “big one” here in SoCal. Our “neighborhood resilience” will be put to the test when the big one hits. There are too many people living in our area for any government agency to respond to everyone’s needs. By being prepared, we can help not only our family but our neighborhood be “resilient”. Facebook – Are you in? There are now 1.3 billion people with Facebook accounts who check them at least once a month. That is 1/5th of the world’s population! A high percentage of these people receive their news via Facebook. Instead of watching the evening news or reading the newspaper, more and more people turn to their cell phones and get an update on all the breaking world and local news. It’s amazing how technology has changed our world. Photo Math Since I teach high school Math, I was especially interested to see a new phone application that my students have shown me that solves any math problem for them by taking a photo of the problem. There is an “app” for everything. The only questions I have is whether or not this helps my students learn how to think and apply the math concept to real life problems. Reformation Day – Better Known as Halloween October 31, 1517 is accepted as the start of all Protestant churches. On that day, Dr. Martin Luther posted 95 theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. He simply wanted the Catholic church to discuss his disagreements. He never wanted to break away from the church, he just wanted to “reform” it. His statements were based on scripture alone. Luther started an entire movement that led to the eventual formation of many of the denominations we have today. Why did he post the theses on October 31st? Because he knew that many people would be coming to worship on All Saints Day which is November 1. Halloween is meant to scare all the bad spirits away on the “hallow eve”. Turn Your Clocks Back – Fall Back in the Fall This Sunday morning we get to sleep an extra hour. Our time changes at 2 a.m. that morning. I have always wondered how police or hospitals keep accurate track of exact time when there is a repeat of one hour from 2 a.m. back to 1 a.m. Free Holiday Light Exchange Do you have some electricity-guzzling incandescent holiday lights in your attic? Well you can trade them in for a new, energy efficient LED string of lights. The South Bay Cities Council of Government is sponsoring a Christmas light exchange on November 13 and 14 at 20285 S. Western Ave. Suite 100, Torrance. Take in your old lights and get band new ones and save money on your electricity bill.
