For the Hawthorne School District, an estimated 90 percent of students fall into the state’s economically disadvantaged category. Through the CAASPP assessments, that gap has grown to about 2.5 times the percentage of students meeting the new standards based on the first batch of test scores. Furthermore, school districts with a higher population of Englishlearning students struggled with the assessment and registered only an estimated 10 percent of said students meeting the English-language arts and mathematics standards throughout the state. “This year’s results serve to establish an individual baseline against which districts will measure their future growth,” Dr. Markarian said. “Our achievement on this initial administration of the assessments was consistent with that of most districts with similar student populations.” For districts throughout the state, the students’ transition from 5th to 6th grade presents a challenge on its own. Middle school represents the first time that students will interact with multiple teachers in a day; combined with new instructional programs and a range of social factors, the impact this change has on each student is sometimes reflected in the academic performance of the child. “We saw in our data that we need to better support students as they transition to middle school in hopes of sustaining the academic gains demonstrated in the elementary grades,” Dr. Markarian said. “To assist with this effort, we have developed a support system for parents, called the Hawthorne Parent Academy, which is designed to provide targeted assistance to parents of sixth grade students.” Prior to the new Common Core Tests, each assessment was so different, that districts across the state struggled to track student achievement. Under the new requirements, assessments are so closely aligned that it is easier to analyze a student’s achievement throughout their academic career. In addition, the district’s teachers and staff have been working nonstop for the past three years in order to better prepare themselves to teach students and have them test ready. “During that time, we have been shifting instructional practice, adopting new materials, providing professional development, and communicating with all stakeholders,” Dr. Markarian said. “All of that work, however, has only gotten us to the starting point in a long-range effort involving the adoption of new content standards and assessments, as well as major reforms to the state’s accountability, and fiscal support systems. “We are learning new terminology, reconciling reporting levels, and figuring out how it all meshes together,” Dr. Markarian said “As for the new tests, they do far more to assess genuine understanding of subject matter than the old ones ever did. We want our students not only to acquire knowledge and skills that are relevant in today’s world, but also to be able to apply that knowledge and those skills in productive and meaningful ways.” • Where do you stand?
