Morningside sealed the game on an interception off Schubert with 2:45 left in the game. The Monarchs had a pair of key first downs to successfully run down the clock for their sixth win, already the most since their 2003 squad went 11-3 and made it to the CIF-Southern Section Northwest Division championship game before falling at Lompoc. That squad was also head coached by Fletcher, who was with Morningside’s football program since the late 1980’s before stepping down after the 2011 season, then returning to replace the departed Derwin Henderson, now head mentor at Long Beach Millikan. “The Bay League is all tough,” Fletcher said. “Peninsula did a real good job on us. I’m glad we pulled this game out. These kids are pretty happy to be 6-0. We had no spring football. We have no junior varsity or freshman team, so we have a lot of young players (on the varsity).” Fletcher knows that the Bay League will be a tough road. The Monarchs will take their unbeaten record to Redondo, which is 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league after breezing past host Inglewood 37-13 last Friday at Coleman Field. Despite just a 34-player roster, the Sea Hawks By Joe Snyder Photos by Joe Snyder Morningside High’s football team is off to one of its best starts in decades at 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the Bay League after rallying for a 24-21 win over host Peninsula High last Friday in Rolling Hills Estates. Playing without starting quarterback Jerome Rosebrough, head coach LaFayette Fletcher, who also was celebrating his birthday, went to Travion Magee. Magee had to get adjusted as a starter as he struggled at first as the Panthers, who are 2-4 overall and 0-1 in league, took a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter. Magee finally got things going by midway in the second quarter as he finished the game, completing 17 of 34 passes for 382 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Wide receiver Adarras Wilson scored the Monarchs’ first TD on a 15-yard pass from Magee and, later in the second quarter, Jontrell Hogan ran 51 yards for a score as the Monarchs cut Peninsula’s lead to 14-12. The Panthers brought their lead back up to 21-12 when quarterback Daniel Schubert found Jack Grimes in the clear for a 77-yard touchdown play. Morningside, though, got within three points with 48 seconds before halftime when Jaylin Wright completed a 50- yard drive on a two-yard run into the end zone. The second half was more defensive but the done well against a tough preseason schedule where their only loss was on September 25 against Mission Viejo (7-0 overall and 1-0 in the South Coast League), the top ranked team in the tough CIF-Southern Section West Valley Division and rated seventh in California, 35-16. Redondo is currently ranked third in the Southern Section Western Division and is led by the passing combination of quarterback Jacob Silvera and six-foot-five wide receiver Warren Jackson. The Sea Hawks’ defense is led by returning first team all-Bay League end Cedric Muzick and linebacker Preston Faecher, who is another key receiver. Murray Lifts Lawndale over Culver City Lawndale High’s football team had a shootout against host Culver City but it was dominating quarterback Chris Murray that helped the Cardinals top the Centaurs 48-41 in their Ocean League opener last Friday. Murray figured on six of Lawndale’s seven touchdowns. He rushed for 250 yards and five TD’s on 17 carries, and completed five of eight passes for 56 yards and one score. That touchdown was on a 28-yard pass to Jalen Walker. Bryant Perkinson rushed for 168 yards and one TD on 13 carries. Perkinson, though, left in the third quarter due to cramps and an injured ankle. The Cardinals improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league. Lawndale faces Santa Monica High, head coach Travis Clark’s former team, at Santa Monica City College Friday at 7 p.m. The Vikings are off to their worst start since their 0-10 squad of 1992 at 0-6 after losing at Hawthorne 20-6 last Friday. Cougars Get First Win After going 0-5 in non-league, Hawthorne High’s football team is off to a good start after topping Santa Monica 20-6 last Friday at Hawthorne. Quarterback Marte Mapa scored a touchdown and passed for another in keying the Cougars (1-5, 1-0) to their first win of the season. Hawthorne will be seeking to begin league at 2-0 as it hosts Beverly Hills, which is 0-6 overall and 0-1 in Ocean play after a 35-6 loss to El Segundo last Friday, Morningside quarterback Travion Magee throws the ball in last Friday’s Bay League football opener against Peninsula. Friday at 7 p.m. Leuzinger Falls to West Leuzinger High’s football team played host West Torrance tough before being worn down by the Warriors 41-20 in their Pioneer League opener last Friday. West surged to a 21-0 lead before the Olympians scored two TDs on passes by quarterback Malik Jackson to Andre Hunt (74 yards) and Earia Culpepper (nine yards). Adrian Galeria added a 36-yard touchdown run. He rushed for 100 yards on 14 carries. The Olympians had trouble holding down West running back Brylen Baucham, who rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Leuzinger (1-5, 0-1) will seek its first league win as it hosts Torrance (0-6 overall and 0-1 in league after a 21-14 loss to South Torrance Friday) Friday at 7 p.m. Inglewood Loses to Redondo Inglewood High’s football team lost its Bay League opener at home to Redondo 37-13 last Friday. After seeing the Sea Hawks (5-1, 1-0) jump out to a 37-0 third quarter lead, the Sentinels came back with two touchdowns to make the game a little more respectful.
