The following is a list of candidates: Running for mayor: Chris Brown, Alex Vargas, Angie Reyes English and Analilia Joya. Running for two seats on the city council: Haidar Awad, Katrina Manning, Osvaldo Ramirez, Olivia Valentine, Amie Shepard, Nilo Michelin, Frances Stiglich, and L. David Patterson. Community Dinner – Tonight! The Hawthorne President’s Council is sponsoring a community dinner on Thursday, October 15 at the Memorial Center. Proceeds from the dinner will go to the holiday assistance programs during the holiday season. Auction items can be donated to the council to help raise additional funds. The price of the dinner is $5 per person. The meal is served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. West Basin Water Harvest Water Harvest is a free and fun family event for the community to learn more about the value of water. This year will be particularly special, as we celebrate 20 years of water recycling. As part of the festivities, West Basin will offer tours of the Edward C. Little Water Recycling Facility, food, carnival games, raffle prizes, a kid’s costume contest, stage shows, pony rides, reptile petting zoo, and the chance to enter into our grand prize giveaway. The discussion will be related to “Baseball in Hawthorne”. It should be interesting to hear just how many famous players have come out of our area. Hawthorne Author Book Reading and Signing You are invited to a really neat event coming up on Saturday, October 24. William Snyder, a Hawthorne native, will be reading and signing his recently released book entitled, “How ‘bout them Apples”. It’s shorts stories from his 29 years in the teaching biz. He is a graduate of Hawthorne High School and will be returning to his home town for this event which begins at 1 p.m. and runs for two hours. Food and music will also be on the schedule that day at the Hawthorne Museum. He will have all three of his books for sale that day, all of them sell for under $10. Try to make it by the museum for this fun time. Shredding Event – Oct. 24 Republic Services is offering to shred your personal documents for free at the city hall parking lot on Saturday October 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. At the same time you can help yourself to free compost for your garden or lawn. Bring your small truck or large plastic bags to haul the good stuff away. I Do Not Condon Heavy Drinking To be honest, I don’t really drink much. When I encourage you to have a cold one, I’m implying that we all should just go home and relax and enjoy your favorite beverage. Your cold one might be some iced coffee or some pink lemonade, whatever your preference. I certainly do not want you or our young people to develop a life long problem of alcoholism like a recently fired college football coach. If you drink, drink responsibly. “Everything in moderation” seems to make life safer for all concerned. No More CAHSE Governor Brown sign a bill that does away with the California High School Exit Exam for all students and it is retroactive to 2006. Since I have been teaching high school Math and getting students prepared for the Exit Exam, I was kind of upset by this decision. I saw first hand that the exam motivated many students to really buckle down and learn the Math skills needed to pass the test. Now, students just have to worry about having enough credits to graduate. Once again, I am not in agreement with a liberal, California legislature just throwing out something that held students accountable.
