Page 8 July 21, 2016 Ex-NBA, College Assistant is new Lawndale Basketball Coach Article and Photo by Joe Snyder Former National Basketball Association and Division I College assistant coach David Miller was recently hired as Lawndale High’s head boys’ basketball coach. Miller will begin coaching the Cardinals this fall, replacing interim mentor Patrick Marks and previous head coach Chris Brownlee, according to Lawndale High principal Paula Rodas. Several sports fans may have heard Miller as a studio sports analyst on Time Warner Cable’s Sportsnet. Sportsnet does the Los Angeles Lakers, Women’s National Basketball Association’s L.A. Sparks and the Major League Soccer’s L.A. Galaxy. Last year, Miller won the Emmy and Telly Awards for his outstanding roles for the Lakers and Sparks. Miller has 17 years of coaching experience that ranges from amateur to being an assistant with University of Southern California (The Trojans currently have ex-Lawndale High star Chimeze Metu.) and the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets. Miller has been ranked as one of college basketball’s top recruiters. Brownlee guided the Cardinals against the Celtics. His best came in the 2014-15 season that saw the Cardinals advance to the CIF-Southern Section Division IIA championship at the Honda Center in Anaheim. In that contest, Lawndale appeared to have its first ever Southern Section title wrapped up, leading by as many as 28 points late in the third quarter against Canyon High from Anaheim. In the fourth period, the Comanches rallied to tie the game, then pulled out a wild 103-98 double-overtime victory over the Cardinals. Lawndale advanced to the Southern California Regional Division II finals where it fell to eventual California State Division II champion La Mirada 49-40 at the Cal State Long Beach Pyramid. Lawndale was also hoping to get its first Southern Section title for any sport since its football team won the crown against Victor Valley in 1966. The Cardinals had back-to-back Pioneer League crowns in 2012-13 and 2013- 14 but settled only for a second place finish behind eventual CIF-Southern Section Division IIIAA champion Beverly Hills in Ocean League play in 2014-15. Last season, Brownlee was dismissed for undisclosed reasons right before Ocean League play began and was replaced by interim Marks. Marks went on to guide a lesser experienced Lawndale squad to a third place finish, behind champion and eventual Southern Section Division IA champion Santa Monica and runner-up Beverly Hills, in league play and advanced to the Southern Section Division IIAA quarterfinals before falling to Santa Barbara. Lawndale Youth Basketball Team Marshall 20, Team Alvillar 16: Evan and Nathan Chick scored eight and four points, in order, to key Team Marshall to a 20-16 victory over Team Alvillar in the Lawndale Youth Basketball Summer League age nine and 10 Division Opener last Saturday at the Bollinger Gymnasium. Marshall led throughout most of the game. After leading 6-2 at halftime and 16-14 after three quarters, Marshall led by as many as six points to put the game away. Jake Rios added six points for Marshall, named for head coach Damon Marshall. “We came together when it counted,” Marshall said. “It was a very competitive game.” For team Alvillar, named for head coach Antonio Alvillar, Gavin Almocer led with six points, followed by Felix Alvillar with four. “It’s Rec(reation) League,” Alvillar said. “It’s about the kids having fun.” For some of the teams, names were not yet given. Age 9-10, Lakers 16, Clippers 10: Nacir Patrick and Samuel Egbahi each scored eight points to key the Lakers to a 16-10 summer season opening win over the Clippers in Lawndale Youth Basketball action on Saturday. The Clippers held a 10-8 lead after the third quarter but the Lakers came back and shut them out 8-0 in the fourth period. Age 9-10, Kings 22, Cavaliers 2: The Kings had little trouble with their Lawndale Youth Basketball Summer League opening win over the Cavaliers. The Kings raced to a 10-0 halftime lead and led 20-0 before the Cavaliers scored their only basket late in the fourth quarter. Age 11-12, Cavaliers 39, Clippers 29: The Cavaliers used a balanced scoring effort to shoot down the Clippers in a Lawndale Youth Basketball Summer League opening game Saturday at the Bollinger Gym. Jeremy Bertran led the Cavaliers with 16 points, followed by Julian Onat with 12. Jaelin Benton added six points. Enajay (last name unavailable) had a game-high 23 points for the Clippers. Age 11-12, Lakers 49, Celtics 29: The Lakers led the entire game, including 43-15 after three quarters, to breeze past the Celtics in their 11-12-year-old Lawndale Youth Basketball Summer opener on Saturday.
