Page 8 June 29, 2017 City Council from front page people are already inside.” Vargas reiterated that the issue was up to the residents of the city to support and vote on. “It’s not something that we can do as a council--it has to go on the ballot,” he said, adding that Police Chief Robert Fager has been made aware of the different pockets that have raised concern. Another concern was brought up by Councilwoman Olivia Valentine regarding an increase in self-storage facilities in the city. Valentine stated that “since this is not a productive use of the City’s land, I would like to make a directive for a zone text amendment for a moratorium on selfstorage facilities.” Planning Director Brian James confirmed that currently the City has five self-storage centers in operation with “two serious permits working their way through the system right now and there are a number of inquiries.” Vargas simplified the root reason for Valentine’s request for the amendment to the facilities not having to pay sales tax and the loss of land that could potentially have been used to lure in restaurants or other commercial opportunities. “We need to create more jobs, we need to have more restaurants, we need to have more commercial aspects,” Vargas said in closing out the discussion while thanking Valentine for bringing the topic up. “Once the land is purchased by the owner, it just sits there,” Valentine noted. “It doesn’t really benefit the City—it just benefits the owner.” On a more positive note, the Council took time to present longtime resident and volunteer Darlene Love with a belated recognition award signed by Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas. “I’m very appreciative and thank God that I have lived long enough to see this happen,” Love said in her acceptance speech. “It’s kind of scary when you think about what’s going to happen in 2023 because I’ll be nearing 100 years old. I think it’s great to see that things have grown.” Valentine referred to Love as a “super citizen” for her boundless energy from the very first time they met. “Don’t count what I’ve done. It’s just that this is what makes our cities grow and become better cities-- when you find people that are so willing to give their lives and their dedication,” Love said after reliving some nostalgic moments when her husband volunteered with the police department more than two decades ago. • touch & take off!
