May 14, 2015 Page 5 Varga, Seven-Year-Old Crum Capture Hawthorne 5K By Joe Snyder Photos by Joe Snyder Eighteen-year-old Daniel Varga and sevenyear old Megan Crum were winners in last Saturday’s Healthy Hawthorne Mother’s Day Five-Kilometer Run that finished at Memorial Park. A few minutes after Varga, a Huntington Beach resident who is currently a key member of the Orange Coast College cross country and track teams, finished his 3.1-mile race at 16 minutes and 53.5 seconds, the sevenyear old Crum sped to the finish line timing 21:13.5, which inspired the fans. Crum, who lives in Lake Elsinore, won by more than a minute over 37-year-old runner-up Prado Gabriela, who was timed in 22:22.4. Placing third was 45-year-old Connie Pendleton in 25:18.5. Taking fourth through 10th, in order, included 23-year-old Hawthorne resident Cristina Hernandez (25:43.4), Katherine Marquez (age 15, Hawthorne, 25:52.4), Gabriela Sandoval (age 23, Lawndale, 26:20.2), Lesley Gonzalez (age 15, Los Angeles, 27:04.5), Trutanie Bljazvica (age 21, 27:38.1), Yayzeth Espinoza (age 14, 27:38.3) and Yessenia De La Cruz (age 10, Hawthorne, 27:59.3). Varga was able to capture the men’s and overall race by 16 seconds over second place Juan Valencia (age 35, 17:09.5). Varga felt that the race was a little longer than the five kilometers. He felt that the 3.1-mile point was at a gate on the east side of the Memorial Center, meaning that it was about 200 feet away. Varga was a CIF-Southern Section Division I distance running finalist at Huntington Beach High School, where he graduated last year. He currently runs the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs at Orange Coast. His personal beat five-kilometer time is 15:36 and 10 kilometers is 33:15. Finishing third was Alexander Santana timing 18:00.5. Placing fourth through 10th, respectively, were Dylan Highducheck (age 15, Gardena, 18:04.8), Alex Garcia (age 16, Hawthorne, 18:05.7), Abel Monter (age 18, Lennox, 18:26.7), Angel Santiago (age 50, Hawthorne, 18:34), William Feliciano (age 48, 19:11.6), Andrew Tovai (age 15, Hawthorne, 19:41.4) and Pablo Rodriguez (age 17, Hawthorne, 19:45.4). There were approximately 2,000 runners in the race that was held in conjunction with the Hawthorne Health Fair. Cardinals Excel in Ocean Met Lawndale High’s Keyaan Cooksey clears final hurdle in winning the 300-meter intermediate hurdles at 41.52 in last Thursday’s Ocean League Track and Field Championships. Seven-year-old Megan Crum won the Healthy Hawthorne Five-Kilometer Run in 21:13.5 on Saturday. Lawndale High’s boys’ track and field team had a strong showing in last Thursday’s Ocean League Championships at Lawndale. In fact, sources were that the Cardinals, as a team, captured the meet as it edged Ocean dual meet champion Culver City. Scores were unavailable. The meet was marred by a few spurts of heavy rain. Lawndale was led by hurdler Kean Cooksey who won the 110-meter highs at 15.72 seconds and the 300 intermediates clocking 41.52. Cooksey qualifies for the CIF-Southern Section Division III Prelims in both events, along with the 4x100 (second place, 44.51) and 4x400-meter (first, 3:31.15) relays. Other runners on the Cardinals’ winning 1,600 relay squad included David Broaster, Jacob Khiu and anchor Hassani Barrett. Along with Cooksey, Justin Agurs, Nathan Sanders and anchor Barrett were on Lawndale’s 400 relay, which was edged out by winner Culver City (44.43). The Cardinals also had wins from Jalen Walker in the long jump (20 feet, 11.5 inches) and basketball standout D’lano Beckles in the high jump (six feet). Lawndale, in fact, had first and third place finishes in the long jump and high jump as Bryant Perkinson was third in the long jump with a leap of 20-7.25 and Walker finished in that position at the high jump (5-8). Lawndale had a second and third place finish by Anthony Gray (113-3.5) and Isaiah Lucas (109-4.5), in order, in the discus. Beverly Hills’ Rashad Ysagilerrie won the event at 117-8.5. Broaster took second in the 800 timing 2:04.92. Santa Monica, which dominated most of the distance running events, had a one-two finish by winner Lucas Jackson (2:03.15) and runner-up Oliver Peake (2:03.51), respectively. Lawndale’s girls were led by Ashley Calloway who was second in the shot put at 29-7. For Hawthorne’s boys, Ryan McCoy had placed third in the 300 intermediate hurdles (43.77) and was fifth in the 110 highs (18.27). The Cougar girls were sparked by Asia Allen who was third in the shot put with a toss of 29-4. El Segundo freshman Tatiana Willis won the event at 32-7.5. In the Del Rey League Championships on May 6 at St. Paul High in Santa Fe Springs, St. Mary’s Academy from Inglewood was led by Kyra Anderson who won the long jump (17-10) and finished second in the 100 hurdles with a very good time of 14.42. The Belles’ 4x100 relay team of Anaiah Brown, Aliyah Hale, Briana Shufford and Keshawna Myles placed second in 48.11. In Friday’s Bay League championships, Inglewood Morningside had a CIF-Southern Section Division III qualifying long jump of 20-10 for fifth place and its 4x400 relay team of Darrius Wilson, Jaylin Wright, Berry and anchor Torrey Allen finished third clocking 3:35.24. Redondo won the event at 3:25.04, followed by second place Mira Costa (3:29.19). Lawndale stuns El Segundo Junior pitcher Tyler Bonsky pitched a threehit shutout as Lawndale High’s baseball team handed Ocean League leader El Segundo its first loss at 1-0 last Thursday at Lawndale. The Cardinals scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly hit by Salvador Mercado. Lawndale, which improved to 2-6 in league and 10-11 overall, has some hope for a CIFSouthern Section Division III at-large playoff berth as it finishes its Ocean play at rival Hawthorne today at 3:15 p.m. • Daniel Varga wins Saturday’s Healthy Hawthorne Five-Kilometer Run clocking 16:53.5.
