El Segundo Dominates Hawthorne Hawthorne High’s baseball team had two Ocean League games against a premiere El Segundo team and the Eagles proved overwhelming to the Cougars last week. At Hawthorne on April 28, the Eagles rolled over the Cougars 16-4. At Stevenson Field on the ground of El Segundo Recreation Park last Thursday, the Eagles overwhelmed Hawthorne Hawthorne baserunner Charles Phelps leads off second base in last Thursday’s Ocean League baseball game against El Segundo. 23-0. Both games ended after five innings due to a mercy rule coaches’ agreement. At Hawthorne, the Eagles rolled to a 16-0 lead before the Cougars scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior Chris Phelps, one of the two Phelps brothers (the other being sophomore Charles) who transferred to Hawthorne from El Segundo prior to last season, had two hits and drove in a run. Max Riley went one-for-three with one RBI and Brandon Brown also had a hit and drove in a run. Last Thursday, the Eagles thoroughly dominated the Cougars, already taking a 16-0 bulge (seven runs in the bottom of the first and nine in the second) after only two innings. El Segundo, unbeaten in league at 6-0, 19-6 overall and ranked third in the CIFSouthern Hawthorne batter Max Riley swings at a pitch during last Thursday’s Ocean League baseball game. The Cougars visit Culver City today at 3:15 p.m. Section Division III, was sparked by Joey Garza who went two-for-two, including a three-run home run in the fourth, and drove in four runs. Lawndale has a brutal two-game series against Ocean leader El Segundo this week. After visiting the Eagles at Recreation Park’s Stevenson Field on Tuesday, the Cardinals host El Segundo today at 3:15 p.m. Lawndale, then, begins its league closing rivalry at home against Hawthorne next Tuesday at the same time. The Cardinals visit the Cougars next Thursday.
