He also took a moment to highlight the academies that the high school has, including the Manufacturing and Engineering Academy, the Criminal Justice Academy, and the Technical Arts and Design Academy. “It think it’s really nice to see that they have been able to get the money and distinguish themselves with these academies,” Vargas said. “Just like our other school districts are doing.” Hawthorne High’s dual-enrollment program that allows students to enroll in local community colleges and earn college credits also received praise from Vargas. This past year, Hawthorne High School students were able to earn 473 semester courses. “I believe that it is important to support all of our school districts,” Vargas said. “Not one is more important than the other. That might have happened before, but I think that it is important and when we’ve done that I believe the most recent administrations in the Hawthorne City Council have done that -- the attitude has changed. All of the school districts are rising together and that’s why you see the high property values in Hawthorne because we have an awesome education system.” •
