Page 2 February 19, 2015 Briefs Morningside High ‘Used Shoes’ Fundraiser MHS Baseball Coach Al Sanderson has come up with an interesting fundraiser to get the team much needed uniforms and equipment, collecting gently-worn shoes. With the help of alumni groups, the Friends of MHS and the Morningside Monarch Alumni Association (MMAA), Coach is hoping to collect 5000 pair of shoes. Those shoes will be collected and weighed by a company who will purchase them by the lb. They will in turn recycle, donate and/or re-sell them to other countries. Any gently-worn pair of shoes is acceptable. Please help the team make their goal. You can drop off at MHS in D-4, Mr. Goldman’s class or if you gather up a bunch, email alsanderdson17@msn.com to arrange for pick up. El Camino Holds Essay Contest for Onizuka Space Science Day Serious-minded science students in grades five through 12 are encouraged to enter the annual El Camino College Onizuka Space Science Day essay contest. The student with the winning entry will be invited to bring three guests to attend the Space Science Day dinner with a NASA astronaut, set for Friday, March 6 at the Hacienda Hotel in El Segundo. Entries are due at 10 p.m. February 24. Contestants are asked to complete the following statement in 150 words or less: When I look into the sky and think about space, I wonder… Essays should be submitted in the body of an email (no attachments) to Robin Dreizler at spaceday@elcamino.edu or via fax: 310- 660-6786. Students should include name, home address, phone number or parent email, grade in school, teacher’s name, and school of attendance. Students are also invited to attend the annual Onizuka Space Science Day event at El Camino College from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7. Onizuka Space Science Day activities will feature various hands-on activities and demonstrations in astronomy, physics and chemistry, along with a free lunch for the first 800 students. Furthering the atmosphere of scientific exploration, a guest astronaut will give a presentation to students. Entrance to the event is free but reservations are required as seats are limited for the demonstrations and lectures.
