News for the City of Good Neighbors from an Old Guy Named Norb Huber The Best Place to Buy a Home in Cali? If you guessed Hawthorne, yes Hawthorne, you are right. According to an article recently posted, the City of Good Neighbors is not just a good or great place to buy a home, it is the BEST place to purchase a home in the country’s most populous state! Wow! This is huge. I should never have moved away. Compared to other surrounding cities, Hawthorne is a bargain. It is close to everything. With most houses in nice areas in CA going for well over one million, the average home price in Hawthorne is a measly $650k. Where else can you invest in a house that is expected to increase in value 9 to 10% each year for the next few years? So, there you go. Forget about moving to a nicer community. Forget about the OC or SD or the Bay Area or even Orangevale, stay put and watch your house value grow! Gro undhog Day The big day is almost here. This Saturday, February 2nd is Groundhog Day. This great holiday derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day sees a shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for six more weeks, and if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness, spring will arrive early. While the tradition remains popular in modern times, studies have found no consistent correlation between a groundhog seeing its shadow or not and the subsequent arrival time of spring-like weather. The Groundhog Day ceremony held at Punxsutawney in western Pennsylvania, centering around a semi-mythical groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil, has become the most attended. Congratulations to Chief Michael Ishii I know it’s old news, but the Hawthorne Michael Ishii to be Chief of the Hawthorne an outstanding choice to take command of one of the best police departments in the LA area. The innovative programs that have been started right here in Hawthorne will continue under Chief Ishii’s guidance. He is a very personable, humble leader who really cares about the men and women that work with him. I know that his style of leadership will continue the excellence we have seen in the past decade during the tenure of Chief Fager. I knew our new chief when he was Captain Ishii. For many years as he was in charge of the IT program for both the HPD and for the City of Hawthorne. As always our prayers go out for protection and safety for all the HPD force who put their lives on the line for the residents each and every day. Too many cops are being targeted these days in America. Law enforcement in 2019 is the most dangerous and most challenging of jobs in our country. If you get a chance to thank them for protecting us, make that effort. I know they would appreciate any word of encouragement. Mo Beter Burgers If you didn’t hear, one of the best burger places in the LA area just opened over on Crenshaw Blvd. Mo Better Burgers was pretty well known up in the mid-city district of LA before closing. Their grand opening is scheduled for next Monday, February 4th from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. It is located at 12734 Crenshaw Blvd. Their phone number is 323- 531-1749. Look at the great looking burgers on their website. Wow! Nothing better than a big, fat, greasy burger, except for maybe a cold one to go with it.
