Coronado, a senior, recorded two goals against Santa Monica. Granados and Gomez each added one goal. Ontiveros had three saves. After visiting El Segundo on Wednesday, Hawthorne (2-0 in league) travels to Culver City for a 6 p.m. match on Friday. The Cougars host Lawndale in a league rivalry next Wednesday at 3 p.m. Animo visits Los Angeles Adventist in the Mulholland League today at 3:15 p.m. The Aztec-Eagles are 2-0 in league after easy shutout wins over host Gardena Pacific Lutheran 11-0 on January 12 at Columbia Park in Torrance and 7-0 at Shalvevet in L.A. a day later. Lady Cougars Outlast Animo Hawthorne High’s girls’ soccer team got a winning goal from Arely Becerra with about two minutes left in the match as the Cougars pulled out a 2-1 win over Animo Leadership in their annual Super Clasico last Saturday at Hawthorne. Becerra scored on a pass off Celina Alvarez to close out the victory. The Cougars took a 1-0 lead midway in the first half when Dayla Ramos scored after rebounding a blocked free kick. Hawthorne continued with that advantage until Selena Alvarez tied it for the Aztec-Eagles in the By Joe Snyder Photos by Joe Snyder Over the past several seasons, the Hawthorne and Animo Leadership High boys’ soccer teams had numerous good battles and last Saturday’s El Clasico “The Classic” at Hawthorne High continued to be a good one. For the first 60 minutes of the non-league match between the two schools located about a mile and a half apart, both squads battled to a scoreless tie but, after a pair of incidents with the Aztec-Eagles, the Cougars put together two goals and went on to shut out Animo 2-0. The Aztec-Eagles, one of the top small schools powers in Southern California from Inglewood, were even with Hawthorne but things began to unravel in the second half. In the 57th minute, Marco Osomo was ejected after receiving a second yellow card. Shortly after, Animo lost key player Jose Perez who fell to the ground and lost consciousness. It was caused after he collided in the air with Cougar freshman goalkeeper Salvador Ontiveros when he tried to go for the ball. Perez was taken by ambulance to Centinela Hospital in Inglewood. “With an injury like that, we were hoping the team would come up to the occasion,” Animo head coach Sergio Medrano said. “It was just that kind of night.” Shortly after the game was stopped for approximately 20 minutes, Hawthorne finally cashed in on the Aztec-Eagles’ bad breaks and got on the scoreboard when Luis Coronado scored on a header off a corner kick from Luis Espinoza. Animo was down a player as a result of Osomo’s ejection. Just seconds before the match ended, freshman forward Oskar Gomez gave Hawthorne insurance on a right footed goal. It came off a pass from Espinoza, who assisted on both Cougar goals. “The game was physical and it was supposed to be,” head Cougar coach Yury Najarro said. “It was a very well played game. The kids are growing up together.” Overall, Hawthorne, which improved to 9-7-1 overall, had a very good as it also recorded 4-0 wins over Santa Monica and Beverly Hills in Ocean League matches at home. The Cougars’ win over the Vikings came on January 13 and against the Normans last Friday. Gomez sparked Hawthorne’s offense with two goals in its win over Beverly Hills. Junior 66th minute. Hawthorne (1-1 in the Ocean League after falling at Santa Monica on January 13 then defeating host Beverly Hills last Friday) hosts Culver City Friday at 3 p.m. The Cougars visit rival Lawndale next Wednesday at the same time. Morningside Begins Bay at 0-2 After a good showing in non-league and tournament action, Morningside High’s boys’ basketball team from Inglewood began the Bay League with road losses to Peninsula and Redondo last week. On January 13 in their league opener, Morningside went up against Peninsula High, a team it defeated 60-57 in overtime to win the San Pedro Pirate Shootout on December 30 but lost 61-44 in the Westchester Tip-off Classic on December 5. The host Panthers from Rolling Hills Estates downed the Monarchs 65-49. Last Friday, Morningside was pitted against one of the top teams in California in Redondo and the Sea Hawks overwhelmed them 80-49. Against Redondo, ranked third in California behind top rated Chino Hills and number-two Torrance Bishop Montgomery, Morningside fell well behind as it trailed by as many as 40 points (77-37) early in the fourth quarter. The Monarchs, who fell to 11-6 overall, were led by Charles Wright with 14 points, Hawthorne’s Luis Coronado gets past Animo Leadership’s Andrew Vazquez to take control of the ball in last Saturday’s non-league boys’ soccer rivalry. After hosting Palos Verdes (also 0-2 in league after losses to Mira Costa and Inglewood last week), Morningside will be at home against Mira Costa (2-0 in Bay after wins over the Sea Kings and Peninsula) Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Monarchs visit cross town rival Inglewood next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Inglewood Splits Pair Entering Bay League action, most observers predicted Inglewood and Redondo High’s boys’ basketball teams to be in a close battle for the Bay League championship. The Sentinels hosted the Sea Hawks on January 12 but lost a good game 58-53. At Inglewood last Friday, the Sents proved too much for Palos Verdes in a 68-34 rout. Terrell Gomez led Inglewood with 12 points, seven assists and three rebounds against Redondo. Morgan Means sparked the Sea Hawks with a game-high 18 points, five assists and four rebounds. After visiting Mira Costa Tuesday, Inglewood (13-5 overall and 1-1 in league) visits Peninsula Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Sentinels host Morningside in their cross town rivalry next Tuesday at the same time. • Hawthorne High’s Oskar Gomez hurdles above an Animo Leadership High player to get to ball in last Saturday’s El Clasico non-league boys’ soccer match.
