September 10, 2015 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings News for the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ From City Clerk Norb Huber 9-11 Ceremony The City of Hawthorne and the New Beginnings Church will once again host a 9/11 Ceremony this Friday, September 11 beginning at 9 a.m. in front of city hall. We will be honoring our heroes of 9-11 and recognizing all of our civil servants who serve our community daily. For more information call: 310-349-2902 VFW BBQ The Hawthorne VFW is hosting an end of the summer BBQ on September 19th. The public is invited to attend. Good food and music are planned for this community event. The VFW lodge is located on 131st just East of Ramona Avenue. It is at the highest elevation in Hawthorne. Their lodge was the old water tank for the city hence the water all ran down hill to the residences and businesses. Job Faire The City of Hawthorne and the South Bay Work Investment Board will be hosting a job faire on Thursday, September 24 at the Memorial Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Employers from a broad spectrum of work fields will be present to receive resumes and take applications. If you know of someone looking for a job, please let them know about this opport Candida te Forums There are several upcoming candidate forums scheduled for the November 3 city elections. The ones that I am aware of are: Sept. 28th at Hawthorne High School sponsored by the Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce, October 1 at Atherton Baptist Church sponsored by the Holly Park Homeowners Association, and October 8 at Dana Middle School sponsored by the Holly Glen Homeowners Association. There have been other forums mentioned but I am not aware of any other ones that have been scheduled for sure. Citizen of the Year The Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce’s civic awards luncheon was held a couple of weeks ago, and the Citizen of the Year Award was given to Alice Huhn for her volunteer work to many community clubs and events. She has been actively involved with Kiwanis Club for many years and the Hawthorne Historical Society more recently. Some of you may have known her from her work as a nurse with the Hawthorne School District. We congratulate Alice for her award and for her dedication to making Hawthorne a better place to live. Planing for the Future I was asked recently where I was going to be buried. I guess when you get to be my age questions related to the end of life start becoming a topic of discussion. My sister and brother-in-law had purchased places for their internment. They didn’t want their children to have to worry about taking care of the details following their deaths. While on vacation up in Washington State, I visited my parent’s gravesites. The experience really was not very emotional for me. Their decaying bodies might be buried there, but their resurrected bodies and souls are in heaven. I look forward to being reunited with them one day. So, where my body is buried really doesn’t make a big difference to me, I won’t be around to know the difference any way. They can just shove me in the ground and then have a cold one or two celebrating my passing.
